Xiaomi has now released details on its smartphone business in 2021. Going by this report, apparently based on data from Canalys, it is safe to say the well-established OEM had a bumper year internationally as well as in its native market of China. It has now achieved top-5 status in 62 different markets worldwide, and is #1 in terms of market share in 14 of these regions.
In fact, Xiaomi now asserts that it sold 24 million premium (defined here as those starting at prices of €300 (~US$330) or more) phones worldwide. They made up 13% of the OEM's total shipments in 2021, compared to 7% for 2020 - a YoY growth of 160%.
These sales made for net profits clocking in at 22 billion yuan (~$3.46 billion), or 328.3 billion yuan (~$51.58 billion, or +33.5% YoY) in total takings, 49.8% (+33.7% YoY) of which came from non-Chinese market shipments.
Xiaomi attributes this success despite the "challenges" of 2021 to its "relentless efforts" in building its user-base in markets such as Europe, the Middle East and Latin America, not to mention the "top-notch" quality of its products and its commitment to proving itself as a premium brand.
The OEM also seems confident about a follow-up performance in 2022, thanks to its "smartphone x AIoT" strategy, as well as the success of a product cycle that has churned out commercial hits such as the 12 and Redmi K50 lines thus far.
