The Xiaomi Watch S5 and Huawei Watch GT 7 both offer long battery life and extensive fitness features. In testing, both impressed with their precise sensors and high-quality displays. However, the GT 7 offers more smartwatch and health features, while the S5 stands out for its light weight and exceptionally long battery life.

With the Huawei Watch GT 7, the Xiaomi Watch S5 faces a similarly positioned competitor. Both models emphasize long battery life, comprehensive fitness tracking, and a classic design. In our test, both watches lasted about two weeks, though the Xiaomi Watch S5 actually lasted slightly longer at 15 days with health and sleep tracking enabled, but it also promises a longer battery life on paper. The S5 also achieves a very good battery life of ten days with the always-on display.

In terms of sensors, both models are very similar. Both the S5 and the GT 7 deliver very accurate heart rate readings when compared to a Polar H10. However, the Xiaomi watch reacts slightly slower to rapid changes in heart rate. When it comes to SpO₂ measurement, both smartwatches are also very close to their respective reference devices. Huawei also offers a skin temperature measurement sensor that Xiaomi does not include, and provides a broader range of health features.

The differences in smartwatch features are even more pronounced. The Watch GT 7 allows users to reply to messages using a keyboard or emojis, at least on Android, and offers additional features for phone calls, such as contacts, a call log, and a dial pad. The Watch S5, on the other hand, is limited to displaying notifications and accepting or rejecting calls. Huawei also offers more options for workout analysis, including the Running Ability Index, lactate thresholds, and cycling FTP.

The Huawei watch also features sapphire glass and IP69 certification, while Xiaomi uses standard glass and offers 5 ATM water resistance. The GT 7 also comes out on top in the display test: at just under 2,970 cd/m², it’s even brighter than the Watch S5’s screen.

The Xiaomi Watch S5 (buy here on Amazon) remains an interesting and more affordable alternative, especially if you’re looking for the longest possible battery life, a lightweight design, and comprehensive sports tracking. However, if you’re expecting more traditional smartwatch features in addition to fitness and health functions, the Huawei Watch GT 7 offers the more comprehensive package.
