Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro smartwatch review - Great hardware, weak software

System change. Xiaomi relies on Wear OS for the new Watch 2 Pro and still manages a good battery life. The stainless steel casing and large AMOLED panel are also impressive. However, the Watch 2 Pro shows weaknesses in everyday use. Our test shows where Xiaomi needs to make improvements.

With the Watch 2 Pro, Xiaomi presents the new flagship wearable. However, it does not replace the Watch S1 family. Xiaomi is focusing primarily on design with the Watch S1 and sport with the Watch S1 Active.

The Watch 2 Pro, on the other hand, focuses more on functions. This is also evident in the choice of operating system. Unlike the Watch S1 models, the Watch 2 Pro comes with Wear OS. This increases the range of functions and the range of apps. However, the Watch 2 Pro is only compatible with Android smartphones.

The Watch 2 Pro is only available in one case size with a diameter of 46 mm. The case is made of stainless steel and is available in black or silver. The black version comes with a rubber strap, while the silver watch is supplied with a brown leather strap. Xiaomi also offers the smartwatch version with its own LTE connection.

The RRP of the Watch 2 Pro is 270 euros for the version without LTE. There is a surcharge of 60 euros for the LTE version. Our test device is black and has an eSIM.

Case and features - Watch 2 Pro carries stainless steel

The case of the Watch 2 Pro is made of stainless steel. Our black smartwatch version is partly shiny and partly brushed matt. The Watch 2 Pro has a bezel that stands out visually thanks to the ribbing on the outside and two silver stripes. However, the bezel is purely decorative: it cannot be rotated and has no markings.

On the right-hand side are two buttons and a crown that can be turned and pressed. The is accentuated with a silver tip. The buttons have a good pressure point and sit firmly. The crown has a slight amount of play and protrudes far out from the case - this regularly leads to unintentional inputs when the crown is pointing towards the wrist. However, the alignment can be adjusted via software.

A microphone is installed underneath the crown. On the opposite side sits the speaker, which is almost invisible beneath the frame. The black watch is fitted with a rubber strap. It has a width of 22 millimeters and a standard clasp. The original strap can be changed without tools using small levers on the spring bars.

The Watch 2 Pro weighs 78 grams with the strap and 53 grams without. Unlike the Watch S1, the Watch 2 Pro cannot be charged using the QI standard. In addition to the numerous sensors, it also has two metal pins on the underside for charging.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not provided any information on the glass above the display. However, it is quite susceptible to fingerprints. The workmanship is pleasing, we only discovered scratches on the underside during the test period.

Setup and operation - Xiaomi watch with Google Fast Pair

Xiaomi relies on the Mi Fitness app to set up and operate the Watch 2 Pro. After switching on, the new watch is automatically recognized by a nearby Android smartphone, and a pop-up message appears. The Mi Fitness app can then be installed. The devices can then be found without any problems.

Both a Xiaomi and a Google account are required during setup. Some functions, such as the Google Assistant, are introduced, and authorizations must also be granted. Overall, the setup process runs quickly and smoothly in the test.

The Mi Fitness app offers four different sections: Health, Training, Device, and Profile. Health is a dashboard with an overview of all collected data. New workouts are started in the Training section. The connected Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro is displayed in the app under Device.

Settings can be changed there, such as which app is allowed to send notifications or which body value should be measured and how often. There is also access to the Google PlayStore and watch faces can be changed there. Xiaomi offers a wide range of free watch faces. There is even more choice via the Play Store.

Settings for the smartwatch itself can also be made via the app, for example for the always-on display, the sorting of apps, or the arrangement of tiles.

The Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro is operated via the 1.43-inch touchscreen as well as two buttons and the crown, which can be rotated and pressed. The top button opens the training menu with an overview of the sports that can be tracked. A double tap or long press does not trigger another command.

The lower button opens the last app used when pressed once. Double-tapping leads to Google Wallet. A short press on the crown opens the app overview. A double tap opens an overview of the last apps used. A long press opens the voice assistant. The assignment of the top button can be customized in the menu, and various other apps can be opened instead of training. However, the other commands are fixed.

Swiping sideways leads in both directions through the various tiles. Daily activity, weather, training, sleep, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation are displayed by default. Clicking on the tiles opens the respective submenu. The order and content can be changed in the app.

Xiaomi uses a reverse scheme to most other smartwatches for swiping gestures from top and bottom. Swiping from top to bottom opens the notification overview. Notifications listed there are sorted by app.

Swiping from bottom to top, on the other hand, opens the short menu with access to the settings for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data, flight or do not disturb mode.

During operation, it is noticeable that the software does not work flawlessly in some areas. For example, the alarm function suddenly stopped working. However, after restarting the smartwatch, it worked again without any further settings. On another day, the Watch 2 Pro suddenly started making training announcements at very short intervals and without any training having started. To stop this, the smartwatch also had to be restarted.

Telephony and notifications - Fully equipped Watch 2 Pro

The Watch 2 Pro has a wide range of functions for telephony and notifications. Thanks to the built-in speaker and microphone, users can make calls with the smartwatch. With the LTE model and an eSIM, that is possible even without a paired smartphone.

The watch displays all contacts in the stored Google account. It also provides access to favorites and call lists. Manual input is also possible via dial buttons. The voice quality is fine. The Xiaomi Watch's speaker is loud enough for phone calls in normal ambient noise. However, these are also clearly transmitted to the other party. Whether the internal eSIM or the paired smartphone is used as a data carrier does not affect the quality of the call.

The notifications area is equally pleasing. These are reliably displayed on the smartwatch in the test. Only long emails are shortened. The smartwatch can display emojis and images. WhatsApp can be downloaded thanks to Wear OS. This makes it possible to send voice messages and start chats via the watch.

In general, responses with the Watch 2 Pro are possible via emoji, voice input, or a full QWERTY keyboard.

Voice assistant - Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa available

Google Assistant is installed on the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro ex works. Amazon's Alexa can also be downloaded via the Play Store. The software lets you choose which voice assistant is started at the touch of a button. However, only the Google Assistant can be started by pressing a button.

Questions are reliably recognized in the test. The answers are shown on the display as well as played via the speaker.

Health and fitness - Watch 2 Pro measures body composition

All the health data collected by the Watch 2 Pro comes together in the Mi Fitness app. For example, the app provides information on heart rate values throughout the day. In addition to the graphical representation on a timeline, the Xiaomi smartwatch provides a daily summary with minimum and maximum values. The software also calculates an average. The heart rate is also divided into five different zones.

The Watch 2 Pro can also measure stress and displays it as a value between 0 and 100. As with the heart rate, there is a graphical display and individual values. Stress is also categorized into zones. The zones are given a percentage and a time. To reduce stress, the smartwatch offers breathing exercises. Stress and heart rate can be displayed not only for one day but also for weeks and months.

The smartwatch can also detect prolonged sitting and prompt you to exercise. However, this function did not inspire much confidence in the test. This is because the reminder to stand up comes when you are running or usually a few minutes after you have just stood up. The times recorded when standing up should therefore be treated with caution.

The Watch 2 Pro can also measure body composition. To do this, two fingers are placed on electrodes in the buttons. The software indicates the proportion of water, fat, muscle mass, protein, bone mass, and salts present in the body. The values are graphically categorized and explained on scales.

Activity goals - Xiaomi Watch with semicircles

The Mi Fitness app displays daily activity prominently at the top of the dashboard. The calories burned, steps taken, and time spent standing up per hour are displayed in three semicircles. The values can be specified not only for the day, but also for a week, and the software also calculates an average. The smartwatch itself also offers a corresponding graph. The goals can be individualized in the app.

In addition to the steps, the Mi Fitness app can also display the distance covered in meters. Steps from training sessions are not included in the statistics. Floors or altitude meters are not displayed. The smartwatch only measures VO2max values for corresponding workouts.

On several test days, the Watch 2 Pro suddenly stopped recognizing movements. In the afternoon, it claimed that the tester hadn't moved yet. A restart provides a remedy.

Heart rate, heart rhythm and blood oxygen saturation

The Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro can measure heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. In order to better assess the values, we compare them with those of reference devices. A Polar H10 chest strap serves as a comparison for the heart rate measurement. We took both devices with us on a bike ride.

For the resting heart rate before training, the measured values of the devices are only one beat per minute apart, which corresponds to a deviation of 1.45 percent. In contrast, the difference in the power pulse is significantly greater. The average of three measurements shows a deviation of 10.1 percent. The measured values of the smartwatch are lower than those of the chest strap in each case.

Other Wear OS smartwatches, such as the Google Pixel Watch 2 or the Samsung Galaxy Watch6, are much more accurate. However, the Watch 2 Pro is quite slippery on the underside of the tester's arm and can easily slip during exercise.

The Watch 2 Pro performs better when measuring blood oxygen saturation. In this case, a Braun pulse oximeter 1 serves as a reference. On average, from three measurements, the deviation of the Xiaomi smartwatch is 2.36 percent. In each case, the measured values of the watch are lower than those of the reference device.

Blood pressure measurement and ECG recording are not possible with the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro.

Sleep tracking - Watch 2 Pro shows sleeping animals

The sleep tracking of the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro is extensive. The smartwatch measures times for light, deep, and REM sleep. Waking times are also reliably detected. The different phases are displayed graphically on a timeline. The software also displays times and percentages for each sleep phase.

The Mi-Fitness app also lists the average pulse rate, the average blood oxygen saturation and assigns breathing points. All parameters are combined by the software into a sleep score, which lies between 0 and 100. The value is compared with that of other users in the same age group.

All values can be displayed not only for one night but also for weeks and months. In addition, the software indicates a sleep animal when worn regularly, which should correspond to a certain sleep type. The sleep rhythm and sleep continuity are monitored. Stress and movements before going to bed are also included in the assessment. The software suggests a daily schedule to improve the quality of sleep.

Bedtime can be defined on the smartwatch itself using a schedule. This can influence the always-on display and notifications. The alarm clock can also be adjusted accordingly. However, the Watch 2 Pro does not offer a smart alarm clock that is based on the sleep phases.

Training recording - Automatic recording fails on the Watch 2 Pro

The Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro can track over 150 different trainings. Goals can be set on the smartwatch for individual sports, such as distances or times. Interval training is also possible with the smartwatch, and the settings can be made separately for each sport.

The watch can also provide status messages during training, such as the current heart rate or average time per kilometer. Especially for runners, there are various pre-installed training courses on the smartwatch for different performance classes. Apart from the running courses, however, there are no other programs, not even in the Mi Fitness app.

The Watch 2 Pro provides a good overview during training. The heart rate is displayed as a number and assigned to color-coded levels. Thanks to the integrated satellite connection and eSIM, training sessions with route recording and music via paired Bluetooth headphones are no problem, even without a smartphone.

The training data output is extensive. In addition to heart rate, speed, and distance, the smartwatch also measures altitude, cadence, and stride length. After training, the software indicates the training effect and the training load. A recovery time is also recommended. According to the menu, the Watch 2 Pro has automatic training detection, but this did not work in the test.

The Mi Fitness app can be used to hold competitions with other users, such as family members and friends. Data exchange with Google Fit and Strava is possible. However, training maps can only be imported or exported via a detour - for example, by synchronizing with Strava.

GPS and navigation - Watch 2 Pro supports all common systems

The Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro supports all common satellite systems and has a dual-band receiver. In the test, it takes a while for the connection to be established, especially indoors or in the door area. Once the connection is established, however, it remains very stable.

We took the Watch 2 Pro on a bike ride together with a Garmin Venu 2. The tracking of the Xiaomi smartwatch was impressive. The route is displayed correctly, even in the radii. Navigation is also possible with the Watch 2 Pro, for example via Google Maps.

Thanks to its own GNSS connection and eSIM, this is also possible without a smartphone within range. The watch supports maps and arrow displays, and navigation announcements are output via the speaker.

Display - Bright OLED panel on the Watch 2 Pro

Subpixel structure
Subpixel structure

Xiaomi has installed a 1.43-inch AMOLED display in the Watch 2 Pro. The panel has a resolution of 326 PPI and displays content very sharply. It is also sufficiently bright. We measured a maximum brightness of 684 cd/m². This puts the Xiaomi smartwatch roughly on par with the Huawei Watch 4 Pro. The Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 are significantly brighter again.

Nevertheless, the Watch 2 Pro is also easy to read in sunlight. However, we also noticed the screen flickering with a frequency of 80 Hz during our measurements. More annoying, however, is the inaccuracy when typing on the panel. This is not noticeable with apps and tiles. However, typing on the keyboard is much more difficult than with Google or Samsung, despite the large display.

The always-on display is a good solution. Although it cannot be activated permanently, a smart function or adherence to a schedule is possible. However, each watch face is assigned a fixed counterpart for the AoD. The lift detection is also appealing. The display is turned on quickly and reliably with a corresponding hand movement.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 80 Hz

The display backlight flickers at 80 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) .

The frequency of 80 Hz is very low, so the flickering may cause eyestrain and headaches after extended use.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Performance and runtime - Snapdragon power for the Watch 2 Pro

The Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro comes with the Snapdragon W5+ Gen1, which is currently the most powerful SiP from Qualcomm. In the benchmarks, the Xiaomi Watch is in a neck-and-neck race with the Google Pixel Watch 2, which relies on the W5 Gen1 without Plus. Xiaomi also installs 2 GB RAM and 32 GB of internal memory.

The performance of the Watch 2 Pro is impressive in everyday use. There are no stutters in the UI, apps open quickly and even multiple open apps are no problem for the smartwatch. The memory is large enough to load many apps and store music from streaming providers offline.

Battery life - Long runtime, fast charging on the Watch 2 Pro

Battery is a clear strength of the Watch 2 Pro: at 495 mAh, the capacity is large for a smartwatch. This is also reflected in the runtimes. We activate all measurements permanently, allow all notifications, use the always-on display, and have an eSIM installed. The Watch 2 Pro then still lasts two days and one night in between. The smartwatch has to be charged on the evening of the second day.

If the Watch 2 Pro is used for longer periods without a paired smartphone or if long workouts are tracked, the smartwatch still usually manages 24 hours of continuous use - even though we use a bright watch face. Without an always-on display, two days and two nights are also possible, even with shorter sports sessions. These are really good values for a smartwatch with Wear OS.

The Xiaomi Watch also scores with fast charging times. The smartwatch charges from 6 to 100 percent in just 35 minutes using a twelve-watt power supply. However, it is a pity that the Watch 2 Pro does not support QI charging, but requires its own charging cradle with two metal pins.

Pros

+ fast system performance
+ bright AMOLED display
+ stainless steel case
+ good battery life for Wear OS
+ fast charging

Cons

- many small software bugs
- no ECG measurement
- no wireless charging

Verdict - More love for the Xiaomi software, please

In review: Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro. Test device provided by Xiaomi Germany.

Xiaomi is now also using Wear OS - at least for the Watch 2 Pro. This brings many advantages, such as a comprehensive range of apps and deep integration of Google services - for anyone who wants them. This allows the Watch 2 Pro to control the smart home, for example, and makes it easier to pay via Google Wallet.

The Watch 2 Pro is also pretty well equipped. A state-of-the-art Snapdragon chip ensures plenty of power and smooth operation. The AMOLED panel is attractively bright, and the frame is made of stainless steel.

Xiaomi has also done very well with the battery life. Two days of operation are possible without restrictions, and the watch charges extremely quickly. However, we haven't tested a smartwatch with so many small bugs for a long time.

Activities such as steps that are no longer tracked, unrealistic training announcements out of nowhere, automatic training recognition that doesn't work, and an alarm clock that no longer rings. All problems currently could be solved by restarting the device. Nevertheless, they are annoying and should urgently be fixed by Xiaomi with an update.

The Watch 2 Pro has a lot of potential. However, Xiaomi should put more love into the software.

The range of functions is also not quite on par with other top models. For example, there is no ECG or blood pressure measurement. The heart rate measurement cannot quite keep up with the competition either. A Samsung Galaxy Watch6 measures more accurately and shines even brighter, but the battery runs out more quickly. The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5, which uses two displays, offers even more runtime.

Price and availability

The RRP of the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro is at least 269.90 euros (~$292). Xiaomi charges 329.90 euros (~357) for the LTE version. The manufacturer sells the smartwatch in its own online store.
