The Nintendo January reveal confirmed some long-standing theories about Switch 2 specs. Still, mysteries remained, like the squarish button toward the bottom of the right joy-con. Previous Switch 2 leaks debated its function, labeling it a C button. In Nintendo's video, no label for command was visible. However, a screenshot promoting the just-announced Nintendo Today! app shows a clearly marked C.
Ahead of the April 2nd Switch 2 Direct, the gaming giant launched Nintendo Today! to provide mobile users with updates. Even with the zoomed-out image on the app page, it's easy to see the C button on the right joy-con. Why Nintendo hid the label is up for debate, but some gamers expect its importance to be explained at the upcoming showcase.
The new screenshot is reigniting a debate fueled by prior Switch 2 leaks. While unconfirmed, datamining of the Switch OS pointed to a Group Chat and Voice Chat feature. The C on the button would stand for "Campus" and start a conversation between up to 12 Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
It may seem more sensible that the C command would activate screen capturing and sharing. Unfortunately, the original Switch already has a button for this feature on its left joy-con. Other theories suggest that Nintendo is embracing AI. If the Switch 2 proves versatile, the C button could launch an AI companion to load an app or search for other content.
Another of the near-certain Switch 2 specs is its magnetic joy-cons. Instead of fumbling with side rails, the controllers would instantly detach or reattach. When separated from the console, Nintendo's January video showed the components sliding along a surface like mice. That has prompted speculation that the C button could toggle a Cursor mode. Still, only having the command on one joy-con casts doubt on that hypothesis.
With the March 27th Nintendo Direct not focused on the Switch 2, gamers at least have a new image of the console to obsess over.
