Early rumored Switch 2 specs pointed to an LCD screen rather than the OLED display of the upgraded current-gen console. That disappointed some gamers who believed Nintendo was once again cost-cutting. However, a new Switch 2 leak suggests that the handheld's screen will support 120hz gameplay. In addition, VRR and HDR compatibility would promote smoother and more vibrant visuals.
The latest Switch 2 leak comes from Famiboards forum user SecretBoy. The poster achieved some fame when approximating the console's GPU capabilities in January. Later reports revealed that the Switch 2 would have 3.1 TFLOPS in docked mode and 1.72 TFLOPS in handheld mode. The numbers were close enough to SecretBoy's claim to give the source credibility.
SecretBoy previously hinted that Nintendo's upcoming console would have a high-refresh-rate LCD screen. Now, the user is expressing more confidence in the proposed Switch 2 specs. SecretBoy also believes a 120Hz OLED screen with VRR/HDR would make the console more costly than the rumored $400 price point.
Based on Nintendo's prolific patent filings, many theories about the console now look accurate. Still, a 120Hz display is harder for some gamers to fathom than a larger screen or magnetic joy-cons. Even without the deeper blacks of an OLED, the Switch 2's display would compete with top handheld PCs like the Steam Deck or Asus ROG Ally. However, Nintendo's recent consoles were not cutting-edge in terms of supported resolutions or refresh rates.
If SecretBoy's Switch 2 leak proves correct, the system could be more accommodating to demanding AAA titles. For scenarios where 60fps isn't realistic, the 120Hz screen would promote 40fps action without tearing.
Gamers shouldn't expect confirmation of all Switch 2 specs in the April Nintendo Direct. Still, once given access to the console, analysts should be able to answer any questions about its screen.
