As interest around Valve’s revived Steam Machine continues, Ayaneo’s already-launched AM01S has returned to attention thanks to a new hands-on video showcasing its compact, retro-styled design and AMD Ryzen AI internals. The model has been available for some time, though the new footage offers a clearer look at how it performs in practical use.

Valve made huge news in the market by launching the Steam Machine, along with the Steam Controller and its VR headset, the Steam Frame. Although there’s little to no information about Steam Machine pricing apart from some speculation from Moore’s Law Is Dead, the good news is that several similar mini PCs are launching in the same category and offer a size and form factor comparable to the Steam's latest PC.

YouTube channel ETA Prime recently got their hands on the Ayaneo AM01S, an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370–powered mini PC that also includes a built-in 4-inch, 960 × 400 touchscreen display. Overall, its design looks retro, but it offers modern capabilities.

According to the video, the flip-up screen hides the audio jack and four USB 3.2 ports, while the rear houses the power connector, two full-size HDMI ports, one USB4 port (40 Gbps), one USB-C 3.2 port, dual 2.5 GbE Ethernet, a USB 2.0 port and an additional USB 3.2 port. Ayaneo offers the AM01S with multiple APU options, which you can read about here.

Storage options include one M.2 slot that supports up to an 8 TB drive and a secondary 2230 M.2 slot, alongside built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Moreover, at $699, Ayaneo offers a barebones AM01S with the HX 370 APU, making it the cheapest configuration if you want that chip. The system ships with Windows 11 and includes AyaSpace, Ayaneo’s control software that manages power modes, TDP, fan behaviour and the secondary display, and it automatically launches on startup.

In AyaSpace, the small screen acts like a second display, so you can move apps to it, change its brightness, or show things like the weather or a performance monitor. AyaSpace also has a built-in game launcher and lets you change the power settings and TDP, which the video tests at up to 65 W.

Benchmark results shared by the creator include a Geekbench 6 single-core score of 2,896 and a multi-core score of 14,915. For reference, Notebookcheck’s averages for the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 are 2,889 and 14,700. In 3DMark Time Spy, the AM01S recorded an overall score of 3,753, with a graphics score of 3,367 and a CPU score above 10,000.

Gaming tests showed Cyberpunk 2077 running at 1080p High with FSR Frame Generation at over 80 FPS on average. Forza Horizon 5 followed with more than 100 FPS at 1080p Medium without FSR, while Marvel Rivals at 1080p Medium with FSR Balanced dipped slightly below 60 FPS during heavy action. Borderlands 4 proved more demanding, needing 1080p Low with frame generation yet still struggling to stay at 60 FPS, though switching to 900p raised averages to above 70 FPS.

In terms of power draw, ETA Prime measured around 10 W at idle with the secondary screen active, up to 72 W during 1080p gaming, and a peak of 97 W during stress testing, staying within the limits of the included 120 W power adapter.

The reviewer notes that the HX 370 configuration delivers the strongest GPU performance among the options due to its 16-CU Radeon 890M iGPU. They also point out that while installing SteamOS 3.8 is possible, the OS currently cannot drive dual independent displays in Big Picture mode, which would disable the small built-in screen.
