Qualcomm has announced new processors designed for manufacturers of industrial PC systems. Such PCs are used, for example, to connect various devices to a network so that a valve in a plant can be conveniently controlled from the control room. The announced Dragonwing IQ-X SoCs are not only intended to receive and manage such data, but also to provide local acceleration of AI models. In this regard, a maximum AI performance of 45 TOPS is specified, which is a typical value for NPUs integrated into processors.
The Dragonwing IQ-X series SoCs are also designed to be used in demanding environmental conditions and in a temperature range between -40°C and 105°C, such as in hot factory halls. Between 8 and 12 Qualcomm Oryon performance cores are installed. Unsurprisingly, the Dragonwing IQ-X series is based on the ARM architecture and supports Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC.
The Dragonwing IQ-X series will also be compatible with existing carrier boards and certain compute modules. An evaluation kit will be available, allowing for preliminary implementation studies. Qualcomm has not yet announced a specific launch date, but the first products are expected in the coming months.
