Microsoft may introduce cloud-based and ad-supported Xbox Game Pass subscriptions
Microsoft faces the challenge of attracting new users outside the traditional console base. With the introduction of Game Pass on Amazon Fire TV Sticks and the integration of the cloud gaming platform GeForce Now steps have already been taken in this direction. The next step could be the introduction of new subscription models.
Microsoft is currently said to be looking into the possibility of adding purely cloud-based and ad-financed subscription options for the Xbox Game Pass. This reports Jez Corden, senior editor at Windows Central, who is known for his exclusive news and analysis of the Microsoft ecosystem.
In July, Microsoft increased the price of the Xbox Game Pass and canceled the console subscription. This makes the assumption that Microsoft could soon introduce new subscription options seem even more likely.
Cloud-based and ad-financed subscription models
The cloud-only tier is intended to be a cheaper option that does not require an Xbox console. An ad-supported subscription option is likely to be significantly cheaper than the normal tariff - if not free. According to Jez Corden, however, this model is still in the exploratory phase. There are not yet any concrete plans to introduce it.
Return of the Family Plan
According to Jez Corden, Microsoft is also considering reintroducing the Family Plan. Microsoft tested this option back in 2022 and 2023, when up to five people could use a subscription for 24.99 US dollars per month. However, the test run was discontinued in August 2023.
