One of the main benefits of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is its cloud gaming feature. Subscribers can not only play Game Pass titles on multiple devices but also stream games they own. However, players often are blocked from streaming pricey early-access titles. That's again the case with the Obisdian's action RPG Avowed, forcing cloud gamers to find alternatives.
The Avowed Premium Edition unlocks an early access period that began on February 13th. Multiple marketplaces, including the Xbox Store, Steam, and Battle.net, offer this version. The Standard Edition is part of the Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate tiers but won't be playable until the Avowed release date, February 18th. Players have the option to upgrade to the Premium Edition for a fee, but they shouldn't expect to stream the game on a smart TV, browser, or smartphone.
The lack of cloud gaming compatibility is puzzling considering Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment in 2018. At the moment, the game is exclusive to the Xbox and PC, even if a PS5 release down the line is possible. Considering the extra costs, it's disappointing that players are chained to their PCs or Xbox consoles during the early access period.
As streaming quality and selection improve, cloud gaming is an appealing way to play anticipated titles anywhere. Nvidia's GeForce Now is on the cutting edge of game streaming, with options to use high-end gaming rigs. Unlike Microsoft's service, Avowed players can explore Eora on compatible GeForce Now devices. Unfortunately, many GeForce Now tiers are sold out as Nvidia changes payment processors.
During its initial reception, Avowed hasn't quite cleared the high bar set by Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity. In its Avowed review, NBC pointed out that shallow gameplay elements detract from engaging storytelling. Nevertheless, it's about to be judged by a much larger audience on February 18th, including Xbox Cloud gamers.
