Last week, frustrated gamers complained about many GeForce Now subscription tiers selling out. The situation has gone from bad to worse, as new members can't subscribe to the cloud gaming service for at least five weeks. Nvidia posted a message on the GeForce Now Reddit explaining that the company is switching payment processors. While that's bad news for new subscribers, this GeForce Now status update means billing is temporarily paused for existing members.
It's unknown why Nvidia is dropping its third-party payment service. Clearly, the move gives it more control over the GeForce Now billing process. Until the change is made, all three subscription tiers will be unavailable to new customers. However, it appears most Reddit readers were already subscribed, as they celebrated more than a month of free play. Another benefit for existing subscribers is that Nvidia is lifting the unpopular hourly caps on streaming for all of 2025.
The halting of new Nvidia GeForce Now memberships is bound to disappoint many gamers. Some options, like the pricey Ultimate tier, granted remote access to an RTX 4080 gaming rig. Compared to alternatives like Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce Now offers higher-resolution gaming with minimal latency.
In the GeForce Now Reddit, gamers were reassured that the service has no plans to shut down. Still, Nvidia is experiencing an availability crisis with many of its products, including the about-to-be-released RTX 50 Series. Most buyers are unlikely to find a GPU in stock on the January 30th RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 release date. Now, new Nvidia followers won't have the GeForce Now cloud gaming as a fallback option.
