Netflix has more than 80 videogame adapations in the works, two of which are already known
Last week, the Netflix quarterly reports revealed that the game for the hit show Squid Game is to be released later this year - at the same time as the second season of the show. In a conference call it has now been announced that Netflix has many more games in the works. The streaming provider calls this the "Netflix Stories Initiative".
A total of over 80 games are currently being developed for Netflix shows. Two games have already been announced. The romantic comedy show "Emily in Paris", in which the ambitious maketing expert Emily Cooper moves to Paris, is to receive a game. There will also be a game for "Selling Sunset" - a reality show that gives viewers an insight into the life and work of real estate agents at "The Oppenheim Group".
If you don't know how to imagine such "games for the show", it's best to take a look at the games already published for Virgin River and Perfect Match. These are interactive narrative games that are primarily intended to give fans an additional opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of their favorite shows.
No specific release dates have been announced. According to Netflix, however, it plans to release around one new title per month. The planned platforms were also not mentioned. However, in view of the strategy to date, it can be assumed that the games will be available on mobile devices (iOS and Android) and possibly on other platforms that support Netflix (smart TVs).
Why does Netflix make so many games?
Every shows season ends at some point. Games are a great way for Netflix to keep fans engaged between seasons. Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO at Netflix, commented on this as follows:
"I think our opportunity here to serve super fandom with games is really fun and remarkable. I think the idea of being able to take a show and give the super fan a place to be in between seasons, and even beyond that, to be able to use the game platform to introduce new characters, the new storylines or new plot twists, now, you could do those kinds of things and then they could then materialize in the next season, or in the sequel to the film."
