Digital Extremes, the developer behind the free-to-play co-op action RPG, Warframe, has revealed a roadmap outlining upcoming content. The roadmap reveals the arrival of a new story quest, "The Lotus Eaters," in August 2024. This quest serves as a prequel to the upcoming "Warframe: 1999" expansion, a time travel-based adventure slated for release this winter.
Prior to the expansion, a fall update focused on quality-of-life improvements is scheduled. This update will have a new "favorites" system for easier arsenal management, further enhancements to robotic companions through part 2 of the Companions 2.0 rework, and the introduction of new Incarnon weapons with unique customization options. Additionally, the update will incorporate various tweaks based on player feedback.
'The Lotus Eaters' is a story quest (official tweet), and it functions as a narrative introduction to the "Warframe: 1999" expansion. Players can expect to encounter key characters and events that may influence the story of the upcoming expansion.
The "Warframe: 1999" expansion will take players back to, you guessed it, 1999. Players will confront new enemies specific to that age and era, equipped with new weapons designed for the setting (official tweet). Gamers will have the chance to go deeper into the Warframe universe's lore surrounding the mysterious 'Techrot'. Hints suggest the expansion may also enhance co-op mechanics. This expansion pack is supposed to be out in Winter 2024, so essentially Q4 2024.
During TennoCon 2024, Digital Extremes also announced a partnership with The Line (official tweet), a renowned animation studio, to create a Warframe: 1999 animated short film. Directed by Venla Linna, known for her work on "Heavenly Vessel," the short film can be expected to provide an in-depth background regarding the story and characters of the expansion.
Further details regarding both the fall update and "Warframe: 1999" expansion are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
The time has come. The stage is set. Now we know the appointed hour.
