Sony announces new PlayStation 5 software update with one notable feature locked to PS5 Slim
Sony has shared details about a new update that it is testing for PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PS5 Slim (curr. $449 on Amazon) consoles. As the company explains in a PlayStation Blog post, the update is not yet ready for full public consumption, even in its beta program. Instead, it has limited beta access to 'invited participants in select countries'.
Additionally, it is worth noting that beta access will only ever reach consoles residing in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US. With that being said, Sony adds that it plans to release the update 'globally in the coming months'. Unfortunately, other caveats exist with the new beta update, too.
For example, the company has announced that it has added 3D audio profiles for earbuds and headphones, which it stresses is available for all PS5 consoles. However, no console supports these profiles during cloud game streaming. On top of that, Remote Play does not support 3D audio in any capacity. Moreover, Sony has introduced adaptive controller charging, which it describes in the following terms:
Adaptive charging for the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge wireless controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and Access controller is now available for PS5 beta participants using the latest PS5 model, when the console is in rest mode. Adaptive charging helps save power by adjusting the length of time that power is supplied to your controller based on its battery level.
As such, this feature is exclusive to CFI-2000 models. Furthermore, the PlayStation Portal does not support adaptive charging. Supposedly, this feature is restricted to using the USB Type-C cable that Sony ships with PS5 Slim consoles, too. Incidentally, the update also adds Remote Play for individual user accounts, which it does not restrict to a particular PS5 console revision.
