Nvidia is set to release a more affordable version of the GeForce RTX 4070 on the market within the next few days. This version will utilize slower GDDR6 graphics memory. This could potentially lead to confusion for customers as this distinction may not always be clearly communicated on the packaging.

According to the latest information from Board Channels, Nvidia will begin shipping a new variant of the GeForce RTX 4070 (approx. $530 on Amazon) on August 20, which is equipped with GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X graphics memory. This should allow the graphics card to be offered at a slightly lower price in order to close the large price gap between the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and the GeForce RTX 4070.

VideoCardz has already been able to publish the image embedded below, which shows the first variant of this new GeForce RTX 4070 from board partner Galax, including packaging. Apparently, Galax has refrained from clearly labeling the memory type on the packaging. After all, the details of the graphics memory are clearly communicated by most online retailers. According to VideoCardz, the new model has 12 GB GDDR6 graphics memory with 20 Gbit/s on a 192-bit interface, which reduces the memory bandwidth by 4.7 percent from 504 GB/s to 480 GB/s.

Nvidia is also expected to use a new GPU variant and replace the AD104-250 with an AD104-251. The specifications do not change, the new model of the GeForce RTX 4070 still has 5,888 CUDA computing units with boost clock frequencies of up to 2,475 MHz, and the TGP remains unchanged at 200 watts. It is unclear whether Nvidia will officially announce this new model or simply start selling it via board partners without informing customers of the differences. The impact of the slightly lower memory bandwidth on gaming performance should be minimal.
