Activision uses AI-generated skins for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, community not pleased
According to a recent report by technology magazine Wired, which is said to be based on internal emails from Activision and interviews with designers and developers in the gaming industry, Activision is relying on artificial intelligence to develop skins for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. A specific example is also mentioned. The "Yokai's Wrath" skin is said to have been partially created by AI:
This approach, which according to industry insider Tom Henderson has been in use since early 2023, is part of a larger movement within the games industry to use AI tools to increase the efficiency of creative processes. Henderson comments on this as follows:
"It’s currently unclear how many Call of Duty skins or cosmetics have been created or inspired by AI. Still, developers tell me that it wasn’t uncommon to be “encouraged” to use AI tools to make some creative processes more efficient."
The use of AI in video game development is not new. Back in 2014, AI was used in Alien Isolation for enemy behavior. But with powerful AI models such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion, the integration of AI has reached a new dimension, potentially threatening designers' jobs. In light of the huge wave of redundancies that swept through the gaming industry earlier this year, this is a sensitive issue.
The MW3 community is not happy about these revelations. There are numerous comments on Reddit expressing their disappointment and concern about Activion's decision. One Reddit user writes: "I hope Indies start advertising their video games as "organic" as a way to let consumers know they were entirely made my humans and have no AI generated bullsh** in it."
