As Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber announced in an interview, the company is currently testing a particularly durable mouse that will receive permanent updates and could be financed via a subscription model.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber spoke about innovative approaches and the company's future plans. Faber has been at the helm of Logitech since December 1, 2023 and is pursuing ambitious goals, including a significant reduction in the company's carbon footprint and the development of more sustainable products. One part of this strategy is the "Forever Mouse".

Faber's vision: to offer a mouse that is designed for years of use thanks to continuous software updates and particularly high build quality. Logitech is currently testing the prototype of such a mouse at its development center in Ireland.

A key aim of the Forever mouse is to reduce the CO2 footprint by replacing hardware less frequently. The Logitech boss draws a comparison with a watch, which remains functional despite its age thanks to continuous care:

"So why should I throw away my mouse or my keyboard when it's a high-quality, well-designed and software-enabled mouse?"

Financing possible in a subscription model

The central question is how a mouse that receives permanent software updates could be financed. When asked, Faber replied that a subscription model would not be out of the question. This means that users would not only purchase the mouse once, but would pay to keep the software up to date.

Whether such a subscription would also include a permanent guarantee that would provide a free replacement in the event of a defect was not mentioned. In general, it is questionable whether Logitech will actually implement the Forever Mouse concept.
