Samsung released the S85D OLED TV globally in mid-May 2024. At a starting price of $1,699.99 for the 55-inch model, the Samsung S85D is meant to service the consumer segment that can’t or won’t buy the more expensive S90/95D TVs. As such, the Samsung S85D can be had for considerably cheaper than the S90/S95D.
Making the TV even more cost-effective, the Samsung S85D price for the 65-inch model has now slid down to just $1,497.99 on Amazon, the lowest ever according to camelcamelcamel. For comparison, the TV has a list price of $2,097.99.
Going over the key hardware specs, the Samsung S85D OLED TV features a 4K resolution, a 120 Hz refresh rate, VRR, and HDR10+ support. The TV can also do 4K@120 Hz thanks to HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. Additionally, the Samsung S85D runs on the company’s Tizen OS smart platform.
When it comes to real-world use, the Samsung S85D OLED appears to be a pretty good 4K TV as confirmed by RTINGS’ “Mixed Usage” review rating of 8.7/10. The outlet applauded the S85D for its practically infinite contrast ratio, high SDR brightness, good reflection handling, and wide viewing angle. The TV also enjoys a wide color gamut with almost full coverage of DCI-P3 and good upscaling of low-res content thanks to the NQ4 AI Gen2 processor.
Moreover, as shown by RTINGS’ 9.3 rating for “Video Games”, the Samsung S85D is also an excellent choice for gamers with features like VRR, low response time, 120 Hz refresh rate, and HDMI 2.1.
The few areas where the Samsung S85D reportedly falters include a harsh Auto Brightness Limiter (ABL) which harms the overall HDR performance and middling SDR accuracy before calibration.
All in all, the Samsung S85D OLED TV seems like a solid choice for consumers on the hunt for a budget-friendly 4K OLED TV.
