Conclusion
The HP 255 G10 C07Q0ES is an affordable office notebook with a simple chassis, good maintainability and solid battery life. However, the performance of the Athlon Silver 7120U is only sufficient for very simple tasks such as Office, e-mail and light surfing. The dark TN display, the limited connections and the non-upgradeable RAM are clear weaknesses. The quiet emissions, low temperatures and usable input devices are positive features. At the current price, the model is hardly recommendable, as variants with a faster Ryzen 5 are sometimes available at a lower price. It can be used by very undemanding users on a tight budget, but overall there are currently better alternatives.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
The test device is currently available at Office-Partner.de (where we obtained our test device on loan) for 372.10 Euros (~$438). In a price comparison, the price currently ranges between 407 and 470 Euros (~$479 and $554), which means that the list price is likely to be just under 500 Euros (~$589). Devices with a faster Ryzen 5 7520U are currently listed even cheaper (from 349 Euros/~$411), which means that the Athlon is not recommended at the current price.
Specifications
Housing
As one of the most affordable devices in HP's portfolio, the HP 255 G10 inevitably has to do without expensive materials. The design is simple and looks high-quality from a distance. However, the relatively large display edges show its low-cost origins. The upper shell is made of plastic and is sufficiently pressure-resistant on the desk. However, if you lift the device with one hand, the casing warps considerably. Even the touchpad triggered a click in the test. The wide display hinge is relatively stiff and cannot be operated with one hand. As a special feature, however, the casing is MIL-STD-810H specified.
In terms of dimensions, the HP 255 G10 is typical for the 15-inch notebook class. With a measured 1.57 kg (~3.5 lbs), it is also relatively light.
Equipment - outdated connections
HP's need to save money can also be seen in the ports. Although the HP 255 G10 is equipped with a USB-C port, it is only USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 (5 Gbit/s) like the two USB-A ports and does not support Power Delivery (cannot be used with a power adapter) and cannot be used to connect a display. An HDMI 1.4b port is used as the display output. The power supply is provided by a barrel plug.
An external Corsair EX400U SSD was limited to 390 and 400 MB/s for sequential reading and writing in the AS SSD test.
Communication - Wi-Fi 6 with just one antenna
The built-in WLAN card is a Realtek RTL8852BE-VS and only offers one antenna for the Wi-Fi 6 standard. As expected, the performance is therefore rather below average.
Webcam - Not worth mentioning

Accessories
Maintenance - battery, SSD and WLAN card replaceable
The innards of the HP 255 G10 can be accessed via the underside. The casing is only held in place by four Philips screws and plastic clips. However, due to the narrow gap dimensions, there is hardly any grip to get a spudger into the gap. The front is the best place to attach it. Inside, you can easily replace the battery, which is only secured with screws. The WLAN card (but with only one antenna) and the SSD are also easy to replace. Unfortunately, the memory in the Athlon Silver 7120U variant is soldered in place and cannot be easily replaced or upgraded.
Sustainability - No visible efforts
Sustainability is not the strong point of the HP 255 G10. A service manual is available here including part numbers (N21969-001 for the 41 Wh battery). These parts can also be found on HP PartSurfer, but without a purchase link (only listed as N/A).
The packaging is mostly cardboard, but the device itself is still wrapped in a plastic film. However, this can be easily separated. The casing is made of plastic and there is no indication of recycled materials or other sustainable production.
The CO₂ footprint during production is not specified anywhere, HP only states in general to produce sustainably.
Guarantee
As usual, HP only offers a one-year warranty in Europe. This is in addition to the statutory two-year warranty.
BIOS and Linux support
The BIOS, which can be accessed via the F10 key when booting, does not offer any special setting options.
Linux compatibility appears to be good thanks to the components installed. We tested the latest Ubuntu 26.04 via USB stick (without installation). WLAN, special keys and audio functioned perfectly and surfing worked relatively smoothly with Firefox. GLMark2 also started and showed the animation without errors, but ended in a black screen after a short time.
Input devices - Good for the price range
Keyboard
Touchpad
The built-in Precision touchpad comes from ELAN and offers good gliding properties (for the plastic surface), a pleasant size and acceptable click feedback in the lower area. As usual, the upper 10% does not work for pressing the touchpad. However, multi-touch works perfectly. We find the touchpad acceptable for short uses, but it clearly does not come close to high-end glass touchpads with a haptic motor.
Display - FHD, matte, TN
Unfortunately, the built-in Full HD display is only a TN panel and cannot score points in terms of maximum brightness either. However, thanks to its matte surface, it is relatively well suited for indoor office use. However, the low contrast and poor viewing angles make it less attractive for multimedia use. According to our measurements, PWM is not used. Unfortunately, the panel only supports 6 bits and therefore uses temporal dithering for the full color display.

The viewing angle dependency is unfortunately very high as is typical for TN, which means that changes in brightness occur even with minimal head movements.
Performance - 2 cores are not enough in 2026
The entry-level device in the HP 255 G10 series uses one of the weakest SoCs currently available from AMD. The Athlon Silver 7120U only integrates two Zen 2 cores (without SMT, i.e. 2 threads) with a clock rate of 3.4 - 3.5 GHz. According to HWInfo, the permanently soldered 8 GB LPDDR5-5500 run in dual-channel mode and therefore only use one memory channel from the chip (DDR5 has two independent 32-bit sub-channels per module, which HWINfo sees here). The integrated AMD Radeon 610M with only 2 CUs is used as the graphics unit.
Test conditions
HP does not offer any dedicated performance modes on our test device, only the Windows 11 settings. It is delivered in "Balanced" mode, in which we also carried out all tests. However, High Power and Power Saving hardly showed any performance differences in the test. According to HWInfo, the CPU is reduced from 15 watts to 12 watts in power saving mode. However, we did not see any significant performance differences in either Cinebench 15 or the 3DMark 11 performance test.
Processor
The processor performance is significantly slowed down by the low core count. On average across all CPU benchmarks, the Athlon Silver 7120U can't even keep up with an average Intel N100. Despite the small heat sink, however, no throttling is recognizable under continuous load of both cores.

System performance
Not only the CPU, but also the main memory and the SSD play an important role in system performance. Nevertheless, there is still a considerable gap to notebooks with a faster CPU in our tests. This is also reflected in our daily experience with the device. Even when surfing demanding websites, stutters occur time and again. 4K YouTube videos can only be played with frame drops and multitasking with several apps is no fun. However, if you limit yourself to individual undemanding tasks such as Office, email, sorting photos and minimal editing, the HP 255 G10 can be quite sufficient.

Memory benchmarks - weak as expected
The HP 255 G10 C07Q0ES with the AMD Athlon Silver 7120U and Radeon 610M delivers 32,949 MB/s copy, 31,638 MB/s read, 36,938 MB/s write and a high latency of 138.5 ns, which is clearly entry-level in the AIDA memory test. Compared to the Office class average, the bandwidth is around 44 to 52% lower, depending on the discipline, while the latency is significantly worse. The gap to modern platforms such as the Acer Aspire 14 AI A14-11M with the Snapdragon X, which achieves more than three times as much when copying, or the Acer Aspire 14 AI A14-53M with the Core Ultra 5 226V, which is also almost twice as fast in Read and Write. Even compared to the Acer Aspire 14 AI A14-52MT with the Core Ultra 7 256V the HP lags noticeably behind; only the Acer Aspire 14 AI A14-61M with the Ryzen AI 7 350 is the only example with higher memory latency. All in all, the test confirms: The memory performance is sufficient for simple office and web tasks, but more demanding multitasking or iGPU scenarios are clearly limited by the low bandwidth.

GPU performance
The AMD Radeon 610M integrated in the processor is used as the graphics card. This only offers two cores and is therefore only sufficient for very undemanding applications. For games, you have to fall back on lightweights like War Thunder or 2D platformers to achieve playable frame rates.
In the synthetic 3DMark benchmarks, the integrated 610M is not particularly slowed down by the CPU and can therefore also keep up with faster CPUs, but it is a different story in the gaming tests.

Noise emissions
Thanks to the low system performance, the cooling system doesn't have to work very hard. As can be seen in the teardown, only a very small heat sink is used in the Athlon Silver equipped 255 G10. As a result, the fan sometimes has to kick in even at medium loads (like YouTube videos). However, the fan remains pleasantly quiet and even under maximum load the noise is not annoying.

Temperature
The measured surface temperatures always remain within limits in all applications and games. We measured 43 °C (109.4 °F) at the hotspot on the underside under maximum load. If you place the HP 255 on a soft surface (mouse mat) and slightly block the fan grilles on the underside, the temperature on the underside can rise up to 54 °C (129.2 °F).
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 41 °C / 106 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 43 °C / 109 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.3 °C / 79 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 31 °C / 87.8 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.5 °C / 81.5 F (-3.5 °C / -6.3 F).

Stress test
The weak SoC does not fully utilize the rather limited cooling system, and is therefore not limited in performance.
Speaker
The built-in stereo speakers offer hardly any bass and are therefore only suitable for listening to music to a very limited extent. However, they are sufficient for podcasts or undemanding YouTube videos. The built-in jack socket worked perfectly in the test and played without noise.

Battery life
The small 41 Wh capacity battery does not deliver record values. However, with just over 8 hours at 150 nits, you can nearly manage a full working day. At maximum brightness, the runtimes do not decrease as much as those of the competition, as the maximum brightness is low. The notebook is fully charged after around 1.5 hours and the battery reaches 50% charge level after 34 minutes. We measured a maximum of just under 46 watts at the socket when charging.

Notebookcheck overall rating
The HP 255 G10 is affordable, but severely limited. The Athlon Silver 7120U is only sufficient for simple office tasks. The display, connections and soldered RAM are clear weaknesses. Quiet operation, low temperatures and good maintainability are positive features. There are better Ryzen alternatives at the current price, even in the HP 255 G10 series.
