Acer Aspire 3 Laptop Review: An affordable Mendocino offering with excellent battery life and a sub-par screen

It has been a while since AMD unveiled its Mendocino line of processors. The low-power SKUs were earmarked for entry-level offerings and began appearing in laptops from HP and Lenovo. Even Acer entered the fray with the Acer Aspire 3.
We'll now take a look at how the Acer Aspire 3 A315 performs in the real world. It is the first Mendocino laptop we're looking at. While the Ryzen 5 7520U sounds like a current-gen CPU, Mendocino actually uses Zen 2 cores.
Our test unit has 8 GB of LPDDR5 memory, a 512 GB Micron SSD, and a 15.6-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080) TN panel. It costs Rs. 45,999 (US$502) on Acer's official website.
This puts the Acer Aspire 3 in a precarious position, as the Zen 2 architecture is quite dated and can't be compared with current-gen offerings.
It does, however, get an edge thanks to its Radeon 610M iGPU, which AMD claims can play e-sports titles at 720p 60 FPS. Can it really, though?

Case: Run-of-the-mill plastic body
The Acer Aspire 3 comes with a bog-standard plastic chassis with a dull grey finish. Sticker enthusiasts will find the laptop's back to their liking, as it is bereft of any branding, save for a tiny Acer logo scrawled on the top edge.
However, there are AMD Ryzen and Radeon stickers at the front. A visual representation of the laptop's features such as USB 3.2, HDMI 2.1 and LPDDR5 memory, is also present.
The laptop weighs a hefty 1.78 kg, putting it on the heavier end of the spectrum for a device of its class. Its lid needs two hands to open because of its rigid hinge. There are four rubber feet, but they do little to secure the laptop in place.
The laptop has one exhaust vent at the back, which is sufficient for its solitary fan to expel its excess heat. Acer has even thrown in a power and charging LED at the side, right next to the 3.5 mm audio jack.

Connectivity: Covers just the basics
I/O on the Acer Aspire 3 is a tad lacking, with most of it being concentrated on the left edge. There's a USB Type-A port, an HDMI 2.1 port and a USB 3.2 Type-C port alongside the comically small barrel pin connector. On the other side, there's one USB Type-A port and a 3.5 mm combo audio jack.
The lack of a SD card reader, RJ45 Ethernet jack and other I/O isn't surprising, given the laptop falls on the affordable end of the segment. That said, the ports USB-A and HDMI ports are spaced a little close to each other. There could be some potential interference if someone is using a USB device and an external monitor together.
Communication
The Acer Aspire 3 packs a MediaTek MT7663 Wi-Fi chip. It doesn't support Wi-Fi 6E or even Wi-Fi 6 — not surprising for a budget laptop. However, it does hold up its own quite well in the wireless standards it does support.
Its throughput (upload and download) in iPerf3 remains consistent across the board. All in all, one can rely on the laptop for steady wireless connectivity, but it cannot take full advantage of gigabit connections. That said, it easily achieved speeds of up to 4.5 MB/s while downloading games from Steam.

Webcam
Even high-end laptops often ship with sub-par webcams that muddy the overall experience. The Acer Aspire 3 fares surprisingly well in that regard with its 720p unit. While it can reproduce most colours accurately, it has a tough time with blue as confirmed by the attached reference image.
Furthermore, content recorded from the webcam will suffer from loss in quality while zooming. However, it should hold its own for basic tasks such as video conferencing.

Security
The Acer Aspire 3 lacks any form of biometric authentication such as a fingerprint reader or Windows Hello. The latter's absence is understandable, but it would have been nice to see the latter, given how common they are in 2023. A TPM 2.0 module is present along with a Kensington lock slot.
Accessories
Acer has kept the Aspire 3's box contents minimal. The cardboard case comes with a 45 Watt external power adapter and nothing more. By default, the laptop comes with a one-year warranty.
Maintenance
Users can access the Acer Aspire 3's innards by undoing eleven Torx T5 screws, one of which is hidden under a "warranty void if broken" sticker. Storage expansion is possible thanks to it using an off-the-shelf SSD. Memory, on the other hand, is not due to it being soldered to the motherboard. It isn't necessarily a bad thing because the laptop stands to benefit from faster LPDDR5 modules.
Input Devices: Keyboard deck flex galore
The laptop comes with a bog-standard chiclet keyboard and an average-sized trackpad. While it is comfortable to type on, it lacks a backlight, which is quite common for low-cost laptops.
Keyboard
Numpad enjoyers rejoice- the Acer Aspire 3 comes with a complete number pad, although you may have to reprogram your muscle memory a little due to the minuscule keys. Its keys a little mushy with minimal travel. That may irk someone used to mechanical keyboards but casual users should be fine.
Lastly, there is a not-so-insignificant amount of keyboard flex around the center. One can chalk that down to the plastic chassis but it would have been nice if it was a bit more rigid.
Touchpad
The trackpad is nothing out of the ordinary and does its job well enough, although its accuracy does take a dip around the edges. Its palm rejection works fine as long as you don't put too much pressure on it.
Multi-touch gestures such as the three-finger and four-finger swipe work fine. One could easily use this laptop by itself casually, but we'd recommend a mouse for serious work.
Display: Disappointing panel with low brightness and poor colour accuracy
Acer incorrectly markets the Aspire 3's panel as IPS. Our tests determined it was TN and reconfirmed by our earlier review of the Acer Extensa 15, which also used the same panel from AU Optronics.
As you can see in the image below, the laptop's screen doesn't have the best backlight, which bleeds a lot. Its sub-pixel arrangement shows large spaces between columns, likely to compensate for a 1080p resolution on a 15.6-inch screen.
The brightness distribution could have been better. 79% is a bit too low, even for a budget laptop. Furthermore, its contrast ratio is just 642:1, well short of the 1000:1 offered by most modern-day laptops.

* ... smaller is better
As expected, the Acer Aspire 3's panel isn't one of the most colour accurate on the block. It covers just 55% of the sRGB, 36.6% of the Display P3 and 37.8% of the Adobe RGB colour space, rendering it unsuitable for colour sensitive work. Tasks such as web browsing should be fine, but even something as trivial as watching a movie seems like a chore after some time.
Out of the box, the panel's colours are all over the place. Its average and maximum delta E values sit at 21.1 and 10, respectively. Once again, its blues stand out, and not in a good way
Some work with X-rite i1Basic Pro 3 spectrophotometer and the Calman Calibration Software from Portrait Displays brings the ColorChecker delta E values to 4.5 (average) and 16.45 (maximum).

Black-to-white response times on the Acer Aspire 3 are surprisingly low at 9.3 milliseconds. To put things in perspective, the Acer Extensa 15 with the same panel clocked in at 21 ms. Grey-to-grey, on the other hand, sit at a higher 38.05 milliseconds. It may not be the most accurate panel around but could be salvageable with some work.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18925 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
We did not find any traces of PWM being used on the Acer Aspire 3.
For more information, check out our PWM Ranking table and also our primer on Why PWM is such a headache.
TN panels are revered only for a handful of applications such as high-refresh-rate gaming. A wide range of viewing angles, unfortunately, isn't one of them. The Acer Aspire 3's monitor has sub-par viewing angles. The screen's colour accuracy is lackluster as it is and it gets much worse when not staring at it directly. Refer to the attached image to see exactly how the details degrade when viewed from different angles.
Performance: Mendocino fails to keep up with the competition
Our Acer Aspire 3 model has the best Mendocino processor around, the Ryzen 5 7520U. A lower-spec model is available with the Ryzen 3 7320U. Laptops with the Athlon Gold 7220U are yet to hit the market.
Testing Conditions
The AMD Ryzen 5 7520U is not a particularly power-hungry SKU with just 15 Watts of TDP. There weren't too many power profiles on the Acer Aspire 3. For all of our tests, we stuck with the default "Acer Balanced" profile that let the CPU spread its wings a little. While the CPU stays within the 15 Watt envelope for the most part, it can go as high as 30 Watts for a brief period, which, for all intents and purposes, is its PL2.
Processor
AMD's new naming convention can mislead people into thinking the Ryzen 5 7520U is a Zen 4 processor. In reality, it uses aged Zen 2 cores which, unfortunately, fall flat in some demanding workloads.
Performance-wise, the Acer Aspire 3's processor sits between the Ryzen 5 5500U (6c/12t) and Ryzen 3 5300U (4c/8t). A low-power processor combined with a large chassis ensures there is no thermal throttling at play.
The processor lives up to AMD's marketed figure of 4.3 GHz. It can hold that figure for quite some time without any difficulties. Single-core performance is about as expected for Zen 2 cores, and multi-core follows suit.
Unsurprisingly, there is up to a 57% regression in Cinebench R20 multi-core performance on battery (1,263) compared to when it is plugged in (1,984).

System Performance
The Acer Aspire 3's affordable price tag only really makes it ideal for light day-to-day applications such as web browsing and Microsoft Office. It is, for the most part, snappy and responsive, although it does get a stuttery if you load the CPU too much. One could perhaps get away with some light photo editing, but not much more.

Storage Devices
The 512 GB Micron NVMe SSD that ships with the Acer Aspire 3 isn't particularly fast, but it manages to hold a steady level of read/write performance even under load. One can't really blame the SSD here as it performs much better on other laptops with more powerful hardware.
