Foldable smartphone camera test: Does the Motorola Razr 70 Ultra take good photos?
With the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 (Razr 70 Ultra) (approximately US$ 1,500 on amazon.com), it’s the same as with all other foldable smartphones: The technology that enables the folding mechanism is expensive, which is why these phones—even at a high price—can’t quite match the feature set of conventional premium smartphones.
Is Motorola cutting corners on the cameras?
But savings need to be made in the right places—that is, on features that aren’t quite as important, not on the cameras.
However, since space inside the clamshell foldable’s body is limited, features like a periscope zoom camera often have to be omitted.
50 Megapixels all around
This is also the case with the Motorola Razr 70 Ultra: It does offer a solid 50-megapixel main camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens with the same resolution. Unfortunately, though, there isn’t enough to support a telephoto zoom camera.
Our test photos taken in daylight show that image quality remains quite decent up to 5x zoom, but beyond that, it quickly becomes apparent that the AI has to step in heavily, and the photos start to look increasingly artificial.
Sharpness also can’t be maintained beyond about 15x magnification—after all, this is purely a digital zoom.
Videos in 8K resolution
Videos can indeed be recorded in 8K using the main camera, though only at 30 fps. The image quality is good as long as the surroundings are reasonably well-lit. The autofocus operates almost imperceptibly, and the exposure adjusts quickly and reliably.
A versatile camera phone with less-than-perfect quality
On the other hand, thanks to its hinge, the Razr 70 Ultra can be used in a variety of ways for photos and videos that aren’t possible with conventional phones: For example, you can prop the phone up like a tent, eliminating the need for a tripod, or use the external screen as a viewfinder for selfies taken with the main camera.
