US$ 1,500 for a clamshell foldable—how does Motorola justify the price?

The Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 (Razr 70 Ultra) is currently available for around US$ 1,500 on amazon.com, and other online retailers are offering it for even less. That’s still a hefty price for a smartphone, so this foldable really has to deliver.

Price pressure and cost-cutting measures

It comes with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage. This puts the Razr 70 Ultra roughly on par with current premium phones. Above all, however, the sophisticated hinge and display technology drive up the price. Special materials on the back are also more complex to process than standard glass.

The manufacturer had to cut corners on the USB port, which only supports USB 2.0 speeds and lacks DisplayPort. Additionally, software updates aren’t as frequent as one would hope for a premium phone.

Comparison with the previous model

The Razr Ultra 2025 is now available way cheaper, even though the older model also features a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.

The main difference lies in the battery capacity: 4,700 milliampere-hours in the old model instead of 5,000 in the 2026 version. The cooling system is also more efficient in the current model. Those prioritizing budget will still find an interesting option in the predecessor.

It’s worth noting, however, that the update period is correspondingly shorter for older phones.

When the upgrade is worth it

For users who need longer battery life, the extra cost might be justified. The 300 milliampere-hour increase in capacity means slightly longer usage times between charges. Business travelers or heavy users will benefit particularly from this improvement. Casual users, on the other hand, might appreciate the cost savings offered by the older model.

While foldables are also rising in price, conventional smartphones have long since reached their price range. However, with foldables, you still have to accept some limitations in terms of features.
