Brand-new foldable concept aims to improve on many aspects of earlier clamshell phones

The Motorola Razr Plus 2026 (Razr 70+) wants to be more affordable than the current top-of-the-line clamshell foldables, yet still offer plenty of performance and features. We’ll find out if the new concept works out.

A clamshell smartphone folds open along the short edge, so it resembles classic flip phones and usually offers a longer, though slightly narrower, internal screen than conventional smartphones.

In addition, you can run apps on the display on the outside or use it as a viewfinder when taking selfies with the main camera.

Brand-new foldable model from Motorola

The Motorola Razr 70 Plus (approximately US$ 1,100 on amazon.com) is a new addition to this product category and is available for the first time this year: It’s intended to be positioned above the conventional Razr 70, which is particularly affordable thanks to cost-cutting measures such as a smaller outer display and scaled-back cameras.

At the same time, it’s not intended to compete with the Razr 70 Ultra, which—with a top-of-the-line processor and plenty of storage—is designed to lead the pack of clamshell foldables.

This makes the Razr 70 Plus an exciting device: On the one hand, Motorola has equipped it with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3—a very fast processor, though not a top-of-the-line one—a slightly smaller main screen, a high-quality camera system, and the same external display as the Ultra model.

In terms of performance, the processor falls in the middle

Let’s first take a look at the foldable’s performance: In terms of performance, it easily outperforms the standard Razr 70, and it also features very fast memory and a smooth 165-Hz display.

This means the phone is well-suited for more demanding apps and games, though it’s worth noting that the maximum possible frame rates in mobile games are usually limited by the software.

The Razr 70 Plus inherits its main screen from the more affordable Razr 70, while the 4-inch outer screen comes from the Ultra model. This is an interesting combination: you get very bright AMOLED screens with good color reproduction throughout. However, people who are sensitive to PWM flickering will have to live with it and should test the screen before buying.
