In the past, we have repeatedly criticized Motorola for not being able to keep up with the update promises of other smartphone manufacturers. Although this has improved somewhat with the Motorola Signature, the manufacturer is now falling back into old patterns with another smartphone that is actually also very high-quality:
The Motorola Razr 70 (approx. US$ 840 at amazon.com) comes with Android 16 pre-installed, but only promises four years of security updates and three major Android updates.
This policy contrasts with the longer support periods offered by Samsung and Google and is a critical factor for long-term users.
Update promise in detail
Motorola guarantees four years of updates for the Razr 70, so you can be sure that you will receive the necessary security updates to protect your phone and, above all, your data from attacks until 2030.
According to the manufacturer, this should happen every two months. In our recent test, however, the security patches were from March 2026, which is now almost three months ago.
Comparison with the competition
Samsung typically offers seven years of updates for its Galaxy Z models. Google Pixel devices also receive longer support periods.
The four years for the Razr 70 is therefore well below the current industry trend.
User context for long-term owners
A buyer who wants to use a smartphone for five years or longer will encounter security vulnerabilities once the warranty expires.
Companies that want to use the Razr foldable may need longer support cycles for compliance requirements.
For them, the Razr 70 is therefore not really suitable.
Conclusion on software support
The update policy of the Razr 70 proves to be inadequate.
specially as there are actually EU regulations that require longer update periods. However, Motorola is simply reinterpreting them, so this will probably have to be decided in court.
But is the Motorola Razr 70 still worth it if you don't want to keep it for that long anyway? You can find out in our detailed test report.
