Large external display on this new foldable — Are apps finally easy to use?

Foldables have (at least) two screens—so you can choose whether you need the large display at any given moment. 

For example, to simply read a message or glance at a picture, you don’t have to unfold the more delicate inner display.

Large outer display in a more affordable foldable

The new Motorola Razr+ 2026 also comes with a 4-inch outer display, which is the same as the one on the Ultra model. At the same time, the Razr+ costs significantly less and is available for about US$ 1,100 on amazon.com.

The second display has many advantages: For example, you can use it as a viewfinder for the camera, or people you’re photographing can see on the external display whether they’re posing correctly. 

You can also use the vast majority of apps on the external display without any problems and often switch seamlessly between the displays by opening or closing the phone.

The format isn’t always ideal

Sometimes, however, using the external display makes little sense: for example, videos in 16:9 format appear very small on the nearly square display.

The on-screen keyboard is also very small and covers large portions of the app’s content.

Is 165 Hz possible on the outer display?

When it comes to refresh rate, however, there are no drawbacks: You can use up to 165 Hz on both screens, which also dynamically adapts to the content. In our test, both touchscreens operated absolutely smoothly.

However, you’ll rarely see the maximum refresh rate—it’s more of a nice marketing figure: Mobile games usually don’t support such high refresh rates to prevent the phone from overheating and to conserve battery life. For the same reason, you have to enable the maximum refresh rate out of the box using a rather hidden option.

The fingerprint sensor is located on the side of the device within the standby button and can therefore be used easily even when the phone is closed.

Our take on the Razr+ front display

Overall, the external display is a practical addition, but due to the awkwardly integrated cameras and its format, it isn’t ideally suited for all apps.
