Brightin Star’s latest APO lens is 92 percent cheaper than its Leica counterpart. The compact, fast 35 mm f/1.7 full-frame lens weighs only 260 grams and is designed to deliver first-class performance thanks to six aspherical lens surfaces.

The Brightin Star MF 35 mm f/1.7 APO is positioned as a faster, significantly more affordable alternative to the Leica APO-Summicron-M 35 mm f/2. With a price of $759, the Brightin Star lens is 92 percent or $8,741 cheaper than the Leica APO-Summicron, yet is said to make virtually no compromises in image quality.

To achieve this, the manufacturer relies on a sophisticated design consisting of eleven lenses in seven groups, including six lenses with aspherically ground surfaces. The apochromatic lens design is intended to almost completely eliminate purple fringing along high-contrast edges. Brightin Star also touts low distortion and vignetting, but does not provide further details. The aperture consists of eleven blades and is said to remain circular even when stopped down.

With a length of 43 millimeters, a diameter of 53 millimeters, and a weight of 266 grams, the lens is relatively compact. Brightin Star offers only a version for the Leica M-mount, which can also be used on mirrorless system cameras from Sony, Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, and others via simple adapters. It lacks autofocus. Manual focus is possible on objects from a distance of at least 0.3 meters.

Pricing and availability

The Brightin Star MF 35 mm f/1.7 APO is currently being funded on Kickstarter. The lens costs $759 as part of the “Launch Special”. The price is expected to rise to $1,199 later on. Shipping is expected to begin in November 2026. Brightin Star ships worldwide, but the price does not include shipping and import costs.
