With thermal camera and projector: Tank 5 Pro launches with flagship chip

Following the announcement of the 8849tech Tank 5 in June, the manufacturer is now introducing a Pro version. The two smartphones are nearly identical, with one major difference: For an additional $200, the Tank 5 Pro offers a FLIR thermal imaging camera. It has a resolution of 160 x 120 pixels, but the thermal image is combined on the display with the image from a regular camera to provide a higher-resolution preview.
The camera can measure temperatures ranging from –10 °C to +400 °C. The rest of the specs match those of the more affordable Tank 5, but they’re certainly impressive. That’s because the Tank 5 Pro offers some unusual features, including a 220-lumen DLP projector with 1,080p resolution, a dedicated 50-megapixel night vision camera with four infrared LEDs, and a large camping light on the back. For standard photos, the manufacturer has included a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP telephoto camera, and a 32 MP selfie camera.
The 6.73-inch AMOLED display offers a resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 pixels, a peak HDR brightness of 3,000 nits, and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Unlike many rugged outdoor smartphones, the Tank 5 Pro makes virtually no compromises in performance, as the device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9400e, paired with 18 GB of RAM and 512 GB of flash storage. At 33.8 millimeters thick and weighing 715 grams, the smartphone is thicker and heavier than four Apple iPhone 17 ($751 on Amazon) stacked on top of each other, but in return offers a massive 17,600 mAh battery that can be charged at up to 120 watts.
Pricing and availability
The 8849tech Tank 5 Pro is now available in the manufacturer’s online store, exclusively with 18 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage for $1,199. The manufacturer notes that a launch discount was not possible for this product due to the steadily rising costs of storage.
