Easy win for Samsung: This budget rival does itself no favors

Drastically increased memory prices have driven phone manufacturers to cost-cutting measures. The Moto G37 has fallen victim to this trend in multiple areas: Not only does its internal storage run measurably slower, but the device also offers a lower screen resolution than its predecessor, the Moto G35.

Additionally, while Motorola has updated the series with three Pantone colors, some previously included accessories have been omitted.

Complete omission of ultrawide camera

Unlike the Moto G35, the new G37 lacks a dedicated ultrawide camera – a major drawback for those who enjoy shooting landscapes or large group photos.

The main camera captures everyday subjects satisfactorily with its standard focal length but limits creative perspectives. Overall, the Moto G37 is a less capable photography tool than its predecessor, missing several features that are now considered standard even in the budget segment.

4K video recording no longer supported

Motorola has also dialled down the phone’s video capabilities. For instance, the Moto G37 doesn’t support 4K recording – a feature offered by its predecessor. Instead, the device only provides lower-resolution options.

The bottom line: while fully adequate for filming short clips for social media, the Moto G37 isn’t going to satisfy users planning to create more involved video projects.

Slower storage than on predecessor

Beyond the camera system, its internal storage is also noticeably more sluggish than the G35’s. Our lab measurements confirmed lower transfer speeds, which will lead to slower app installations and file transfers in everyday use. As a result, moving files from a PC to the G37 will take appreciably longer. These compromises come amid a sharp rise in memory prices, which is forcing Motorola to implement significant cost-cutting measures.

The Moto G37 is a clear example of how market forces can affect the specifications of entry-level devices: Features are removed without any corresponding price drop.
