No 4K, no wide angle: How good is the Moto G37’s camera?

The Motorola Moto G37 may look like it has a lot to offer in terms of its camera, but it actually offers very little.
The Motorola Moto G37 may look like it has a lot to offer in terms of its camera, but it actually offers very little.
No one probably expected these camera compromises, but high memory prices are forcing more and more manufacturers to cut costs. That’s why the Motorola Moto G37 offers neither 4K video recording nor an ultra-wide-angle lens. Is it still good enough for decent photos?

The Motorola Moto G37 (available at amazon.com) is positioned as the successor to the popular G35, but it brings notable changes in camera technology.

The main camera delivers acceptable results for its price range, especially in sufficient light. The front camera produces decent photos, but significant loss of detail becomes apparent when zooming in heavily.

Lab measurements confirm low sharpness

Image analysis in the test lab reveals mixed results: In sufficient light, the photos deliver usable results for personal use. However, sharpness remains consistently low, which is particularly noticeable when using digital zoom or cropping the images afterward.

Details are lost more quickly than with higher-end competing models. The measured image sharpness is sufficient for social media posts, but not for demanding image editing.

Low-light performance stands out positively

The image brightening in low-light conditions is a positive feature. The sensors perform more effectively here than is typical for this price range. Some fine texture details are lost.

The performance is reasonably adequate for snapshots at evening events or in dimly lit rooms. In complex lighting situations, the limitations of the small sensor’s optics become apparent.

Loss of the wide-angle lens is a major drawback

Compared to its direct predecessor, the G35, the Moto G37 performs worse in several categories: The loss of the wide-angle camera is particularly significant, as it was practical for many everyday situations. Video recording in 4K resolution is also no longer available. The new model’s only strengths are its reliable autofocus performance and acceptable color reproduction.

The bottom line: The Moto G37 meets basic photography needs but is no substitute for a full-fledged camera system. For those who mainly take photos for social media in good lighting conditions, this smartphone may be sufficient.

The detailed review on Notebookcheck, with its extensive image comparisons and lab analyses, helps you objectively assess the camera’s actual performance.
