Magic Pro turns Apple iPhones and Android smartphones into thermal cameras
The brand-new Rision Magic and Magic Pro connect via USB-C to an Apple iPhone ($749 on Amazon) or an Android smartphone, and – when paired with a companion app – instantly transform the smartphone into a thermal imaging camera. The two models differ primarily in their resolution.
The Rision Magic offers a native resolution of 160 × 120 pixels, while the Magic Pro has a resolution of 256 × 192 pixels. Both cameras feature a function called "QuadIR Super Resolution," which allows the image ultimately displayed on the smartphone screen to be scaled to four times the native resolution. Even more exciting is a feature called AI Dual-Light Fusion. This combines images from the smartphone’s main camera and the thermal imaging camera to overlay the temperature onto a particularly high-resolution image.
Both cameras can measure temperatures ranging from -20 ºC to +600 ºC. According to the manufacturer, the measured values should deviate by no more than 2 percent from the actual temperature. For a more convenient workflow, the smartphone app can add GPS coordinates and a watermark to images and automatically generate a PDF report. The cameras are said to consume only 0.32 watts of power and are powered via USB-C. The aluminum housing weighs just 25 grams.
Pricing and availability
The Rision Magic and Magic Pro thermal imaging cameras are now available in the manufacturer’s online store. The Rision Magic costs $119 with a launch discount, while the Magic Pro is priced at $299.
