An affordable and compact full-frame lens that is said to be particularly versatile thanks to its autofocus, relatively short minimum focus distance, and decent maximum aperture – that’s what SG-Image aims to offer with its new AF 35 mm f/2.2 for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Leica L.

After the Chinese lens manufacturer SG-Image has already introduced the 35 mm f/1.2 for cameras with APS-C sized sensors, the company is now introducing a 35 mm f/2.2 lens for full-frame cameras. The brand-new SG-Image AF 35 mm f/2.2 is available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Leica L mount cameras.

The lens is particularly appealing for compact cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix S9 ($1,197 on Amazon) or the Sigma bf, as its metal body is just 36.2 millimeters long with a diameter of 69 millimeters. At 163 grams, it is also relatively lightweight. The lens features a 52-millimeter filter thread and supports autofocus. It can focus on objects at a minimum distance of 0.35 meters from the sensor, resulting in a maximum magnification ratio of 1:7.7.

SG-Image employs a design consisting of seven lenses in five groups, as well as a nine-blade aperture. To keep costs down, SG-Image has opted not to use expensive specialty glass or aspherically ground surfaces. As the manufacturer’s MTF curves show, the lens is still supposed to produce sharp images in the center of the frame, it is only in the corners that the SG-Image AF 35 mm f/2.2 loses sharpness drastically at wide-open aperture. The sample photos clearly show that the lens does not offer particularly high contrast, giving the photos a look reminiscent of older retro lenses.

Pricing and availability

The SG-Image AF 35 mm f/2.2 full-frame lens is now available for $149 in the manufacturer’s online store. There is an additional charge of $10 for the lens hood. SG-Image ships worldwide from China. Prices do not include import sales tax, customs duties, or shipping costs.
