Over the past months, somewhat conflicting rumors have claimed that the pill-shaped punch hole of the Apple iPhone 17 Pro will remain unchanged on the iPhone 18 Pro or become slightly smaller. Others have asserted that Apple might be able to hide all sensors except the front-facing camera under the AMOLED panel, which would significantly reduce the size of the punch hole.
A new report from The Information now reinforces the latter rumors. However, the punch hole might no longer be positioned in the center of the display, but in the upper left corner of the screen, which would result in an asymmetrical design. The report further suggests that at least one of the flagship’s three rear cameras will feature a variable aperture, likely the 48MP main camera. Manually adjusting the aperture would allow users to capture photos and videos with greater depth of field when needed.
iPhone Fold could get 4:3 display
The Information also confirms many earlier rumors about the Apple iPhone Fold. According to the report, the foldable smartphone has a 5.3-inch display when folded and expands to 7.7 inches when unfolded. When folded, the display supposedly has an aspect ratio of roughly 2:3 or 10:15, which turns to 4:3 when unfolded.
This would make the iPhone Fold significantly shorter when folded than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 (from $1599 on Amazon), whose secondary display measures 6.5 inches and has a 9:21 aspect ratio. As usual, such early rumors should be treated with caution. Apple’s iPhone Fold is expected to be officially unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 series in September 2026.
