The most popular processors in smartphones is set to win the UMPC market too
Research firm ABI research predicts that by 2013, processors that power today’s smartphones will be predominant in UMPCs as well – as reported by Heux.net. These processors include the hugely popular ARM, the immensely powerful Snapdragon, and multimedia boosters such as NVIDIA’s Tegra. Note that Intel is quite prevalent right now with its Atom range of CPUs. CES 2010 has already seen the likes of Lenovo coming up with the Snapdragon-powered Skylight smartbook.
Among these non-Intel processors, the ARM is probably the most versatile CPU series for any mobile platform, so much so that the UMPC manufacturers have started adopting it too. It is the one that powers most of your smartphones these days, although it is not as powerful as the Snapdragon found inside the HD2 and Nexus One.
Ultra mobile personal computers (UMPC) are the portable computers powered by very lower power platform (Atom and below), but are too big to fit in your pocket. As this category gains popularity, especially the tablets, there are strong innovation and diversification at work to make the one’s product different from the market.
