The 17 Air is tipped to become the newest kind of iPhone in 2025, in that it might launch as the handset equivalent of the iPad Pro 13 (M4, now available for $1,195 on Amazon) in terms of how thin it is projected to be.
It is projected to measure between 5.0 and 6.9 millimeters (mm) in height (a range possibly intended to account for rear camera bulge) by the prodigious leaker Digital Chat Station, as is its alleged Samsung rival the Galaxy S25 Slim.
Those dimensions, however ground-breaking, do imply that neither device will be able to keep up with the ongoing acceleration in battery technology, particularly among Android smartphones.
Indeed, Digital Chat Station now predicts that the S25 Slim and 17 Air will have batteries of "only" 3,000mAh to 4,000mAh in capacity.
The apparently last-gen spec is a necessary evil to prevent overheating and ensure that the supposedly super-skinny iPhone can debut with the same kind of Apple A19 silicon as its non-Air counterparts.
Similarly, the S25 Slim might have to make the same compromise if it wants to debut with the same Snapdragon 8 Elite platform as its Ultra sibling.
Ironically, the apparently retrograde nature of the next-gen Slim/Air smartphones might spark a new trend of similarly skinny Android mid-rangers, although they are projected to support larger, ~5,000mAh capacities thanks to cutting-edge silicon-carbon technology and less powerful silicon.
