The iPhone 17 Air is set to go into mass production soon, provided that Apple can find a contract manufacturer to make its ambitious plans a reality.

DigiTimes reports that the iPhone 17 Slim or the iPhone 17 Air - the name has not yet been finalized - has entered another production phase. Namely the "New Product Introduction" phase, where the new product is made available to possible contract manufacturers, even if only in the form of ideas, plans and sketches. These manufacturers then examine the design and confirm whether the product is suitable for mass production. The responsible manufacturers then have to deal with a kind of system planning and ultimately point out any limitations in manufacturing, such as not being able to implement certain parts of the design.

How difficult this phase will be depends heavily on the specific product. Since the iPhone 17 Slim or Air is supposed to be particularly thin, this phase is likely to be considerably more challenging compared to a small iteration of a product with a slightly different arrangement of cameras or even a slightly different arrangement of chips, for example. It is even conceivable that contract manufacturers may tell Apple that certain production steps are not feasible and that design changes will have to be made. Technologically, the iPhone 17 Air could be a pioneer for a foldable iPhone, both in terms of the display technology and the thin design.

Until an official confirmation from Apple, which is unlikely to transpire, the DigiTimes report should of course be taken with a grain of salt. Then again, DigiTimes is very well connected in the industry and it is only logical that leaks from the production chain come at precisely the moment when Apple has to share its plans with other companies.
