Varjo has released the XR-4 mixed reality headsets with 4K displays for each eye that produce a combined 28 million pixel display resolution. This exceeds the resolution of all consumer VR/XR headsets on the market today including the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. Three models are available – the XR-4, XR-4 Focal Edition, and XR-4 Secure Edition.

Varjo has launched the XR-4 mixed reality headset lineup with the highest display resolution of any consumer MR headset. Dual 4K displays combine to project 28 million pixels across a 120 degree horizontal by 105 degree vertical field of view. This leaps past the 21 MP display of the unreleased Apple Vision Pro, the 9.1 MP display of the Meta Quest 3, and the 7.3 MP display of the Vive XR Elite (available on Amazon).

The base XR-4 is equipped with dual 3840x3744 pixel, mini-LED displays, 200 Hz eye tracking, 3D DTS audio, and dual noise-cancelling microphones. 90Hz displays coupled with 200 Hz eye tracking produce a smooth mixed reality experience. To create the mixed reality view, dual 20 MP cameras capture the real world with a pass-through of 33 pixels per degree for the 51 ppd display. Studies of human vision suggest that the limit of visual acuity is around 50 to 80 ppd. Displays that exceed this limit appear pixel-free. For comparison, a 6 inch smartphone with a 1920x1080 display held 1 foot away has a calculated ppd of 78.

The enhanced XR-4 Focal Edition adds camera autofocus and improves the image pass-through to 51 ppd for an even more immersive experience. And for government customers, the XR-4 Secure Edition is fully offline with the option to remove all wireless transmitters for secret work on the next stealth aircraft and other sensitive projects.

All three models are compatible with SteamVR tracking and can pair with an Ultraleap Motion Controller 2 for hand gesture control. Enterprise can buy the XR-4 series now from US$3,990+ while consumers can sign up for the waitlist.

Varjo Releases New XR-4 Series to Deliver Mixed Reality Experiences Indistinguishable from Natural Sight

Varjo is the first company to introduce gaze-directed, high-resolution autofocus cameras in mixed reality with the XR-4 Series; At $3990, the Varjo XR-4 is half the price of XR-3

HELSINKI, Finland / ORLANDO, Florida – November 27, 2023 – Varjo, the technology leader in industrial-grade VR/XR hardware and software, today advanced the state of the art in highest-fidelity virtual and mixed reality with the debut of its next generation XR-4 series headsets – XR-4, XR-4 Focal Edition and XR-4 Secure Edition. Through the fusion of its highest-resolution displays, foveated capture stream, advanced LiDAR depth sensing and camera sensors, all of which mimic the function of the human eye, the Varjo XR-4 series offers virtual and mixed reality experiences practically indistinguishable from natural sight.

Going far beyond consumer-grade headsets that only cater to 2D productivity use cases, Varjo’s 4th generation headsets are designed to deliver deeply immersive VR/XR experiences for industrial customers who require top visual fidelity and performance. Today, over 25% of Fortune 100 companies are using Varjo’s technology to train astronauts and pilots, radically shorten automotive production timelines, power medical breakthroughs, and render stunning 3D visualizations for architects and designers.

Powered by NVIDIA GPUs and integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, the XR-4 series allows developers and industrial users to render photorealistic scenes and unlock ray tracing in mixed reality. The combined technologies dwarf the computational power that can be achieved with a mobile chip and are a game-changer for developers. The Varjo-ready software ecosystem of over 100 third-party PC applications and 3D engines, including Unreal Engine and Unity, integrates the XR-4 series into the world’s most demanding workflows across training and simulation, design and engineering, healthcare and more.

“As we enter a period of rapid expansion in mixed reality adoption, we’re proud to drive the industry forward by bridging the gap between human vision and computer vision with our new XR-4 series,” said Patrick Wyatt, Chief Product Officer of Varjo.

“For the past five years, Varjo customers have demonstrated that true innovation happens when the most advanced computing power meets the highest-immersion XR in the hands of industrial users, and we can’t wait to see the applications unlocked by the XR-4 series’ technological breakthroughs.”

Varjo is the first VR/XR company to bring the gaze-directed autofocus mixed reality pass-through feature to market. Autofocus cameras mimic the behavior of the human eye and match the human acuity required for mission-critical work.

Key features of the XR-4 Series include:

  • Dual 4K x 4K displays with a resolution of 51 pixels per degree (ppd) and over 50% wider field of view (120° x 105°) compared to previous-generation devices, with double the display brightness (200 nits) and wider color gamut with 96% DCI-P3
  • Dual 20 Mpx cameras for powering the industry’s highest-fidelity, real-time photorealistic video pass-through mixed reality
  • New ambient light sensors and 8 x improved LiDAR resolution compared to Varjo XR-3 that seamlessly blends real and virtual elements
  • Built-in DTS 3D spatial audio with noise-canceling mics and integrated speakers for collaborative use cases
  • Inside-out tracking and in-box Varjo Controllers, powered by Razer, providing precise interactions with high tactile immersion, and reducing setup complexity and cost
  • Powered by NVIDIA RTX™ Ada Generation GPUs and integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, the platform for connecting complex 3D pipelines and developing applications based on OpenUSD
  • Optimized for seamless cloud streaming, sharing and collaboration in Varjo Reality Cloud to streamline immersive 3D workflows across organizations.

The XR-4 Focal Edition has all the features of the XR-4 but offers the gaze-directed autofocus cameras and further optimized camera resolution for pilot training and other cockpit-based use cases. To meet the needs of Varjo’s government and defense customers, the XR-4 Secure Edition adheres to all government and enterprise-level security requirements.

Both the XR-4 and XR-4 Focal Edition offer versions of the headsets that can go completely offline, are TAA compliant, non-RF and assembled in Finland. Varjo has also expanded its secure manufacturing capabilities with a new facility in Espoo, Finland where a dedicated manufacturing line for the XR-4 Secure Edition will be operational in December.

Available now for enterprise orders

The XR-4 series pricing starts at 3990 euros or dollars. The new headsets are available for enterprise orders immediately, with first shipments starting in December.

The Varjo XR-4 Focal Edition headset is available to demo for the first time at I/ITSEC, the world’s largest training, simulation and modeling event. For more information, please contact press(at)
