ViXion has opened presales of its ViXion1 auto-focusing eyeglasses in Japan. This allows users to see clearly at all distances regardless of whether they have farsightedness or nearsightedness.
As people age, their eyesight often requires correction of hyperopia or myopia with eyeglasses. Some older wearers are still forced to remove their glasses frequently because their vision cannot adjust well between looking at objects near and far during the workday with these regular eyeglasses.
The current solution is progressive lens eyeglasses – the top portion of each lens focuses well on far away objects and the lower portions focus on progressively closer objects – but only a slender part of the lens can be used to see an object at a certain distance clearly. This forces the wearer to tilt their head awkwardly at times to see near or far.
The ViXion1 eliminates these problems by autofocusing on the object in front of the user, adjusting the lenses based on the distance. The ViXion1 can even help normal sighted users see extremely small, close-up work better because it can focus as close as 5 cm (approx. 2 inches).
The autofocusing eyeglasses can operate for 10 hours between charges and weighs a comfortable 55 grams (approx. 1.94 ounces). A USB-C charger recharges the 150 mAh battery in 3 hours. The glasses connect wirelessly over Bluetooth 5.0, and the smartphone app can calibrate focus, switch between automatic and manual focus modes, and display details such as distance to object and battery level.
The ViXion01 measures 160 x 160 x 35 mm (approx. 6.30 x 6.30 x 1.38 inches). The glasses are IPX3 rated for water resistance to light splashes. The PD, the distance between pupils, can be adjusted between 60 and 70 mm.
The ViXion1 is priced at 99,000 yen with a 900 yen shipping charge (approx. $665 total). Presales are open only to buyers with an address in Japan. Readers who can’t order the ViXion1 and don’t want the limited view of progressives can add a pair of magnifying, flip-up clip-ons to their regular eyeglasses (like this at Amazon).
