Vrgineers has introduced the XTAL 3 CAVU mixed reality headset for pilot training. By utilizing an AMD Xilinx FGPA in coordination with a Nvidia Quadro RTX A6000, super low-latency and fast image updates are achieved.

Vrgineers has announced the XTAL 3 CAVU mixed reality headset for pilot training. The CAVU builds upon their current XTAL 3 headset by focusing on enhancing the performance and latency by utilizing an AMD FGPA in coordination with a Nvidia Quadro connected directly by a PCI Express Gen 3 channel. This reduces latency to a mere 1 millisecond.

Latency is a great concern for mixed reality users because a long delay between head movement and the update of the projected images can cause nausea and disorientation issues called simulator sickness that can last for hours after the headset has been taken off. Critically for pilot training, mere milliseconds count during rapid fighter maneuvers to survive against enemy fighter attacks. Other mixed reality headsets on the market (such as this one on Amazon) typically have a latency greater than 15 msec.

The XTAL 3 CAVU utilizes 24 megapixel cameras to capture the real-world images, which are then fed to a dedicated AMD Xilinx FGPA PCIe card over an optical cable feed. A Nvidia Quadro RTX A6000 overlays virtual reality images on top of the real-world feed before feeding the mixed reality video feed to the headset. Because the AMD and Nvidia are connected directly over PCIe, no additional latency is introduced from the CPU.

The current XTAL 3 headset has dual 4K displays in addition to an ultra-wide 180 degree horizontal and 120 degree vertical field of view that exceeds that of other mixed reality devices. Each display can update at 75 Hz in 4K and 120 Hz in QHD mode to give pilots an ultra-responsive view whether flying a plane in commercial software such as X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator or in military simulators.

The new XTAL 3 CAVU is expected to be available for military purchase in 2024 while an improved XTAL 3 will be released for the public.

Vrgineers Launches XTAL 3 CAVU MR Headset with Advanced AMD and NVIDIA Chips

PRAGUE, Nov. 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The US-Czech startup, Vrgineers, specializing in Virtual and Mixed Reality technologies for pilot training, has teamed up with AMD and NVIDIA, graphical chip rivals, to pioneer an innovative architecture for mixed reality simulators. Vrgineers will unveil the new MR headset XTAL 3 CAVU at I/ITSEC 2023.

Mixed reality technology is gaining momentum in the simulation industry, especially in pilot training environment and is expected to surpass the usage of standard projection-based simulators. Today's mixed reality technology has been limited by the quality of image sensors and high-performance requirements.

To address this challenge Vrgineers designed an innovative system that eliminates calculation bottlenecks and brings mixed reality technology to the forefront of the industry with its new XTAL 3 CAVU (Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited) Mixed Reality Headset. This unique mixed reality system utilizes 24Mpix image sensors that are connected to Xilinx FPGA PCIe16x card (chip manufacturer acquired by AMD) via optical cables. This "hardcoded" processor is dedicated to calculating high resolution mixed reality images in just 1 millisecond, while the direct connection with the latest NVIDIA Quadro RTX A6000 GPU bypasses the CPU, reducing overall latency to a minimum. As a result, the Quadro RTXA600 is entirely dedicated to virtual reality calculations, conserving resources and enhancing performance.
