Samsung's first AR/VR headset rumoured to debut alongside Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6
Samsung's foray into the AR/VR headset market has been talked about for some time. Outside of company officials confirming that it is in the works, there has been no indication about its innards, although one can reasonably assume it will try to mimic Apple's Vision Pro. A new report from the South Korean media outlet Joongang says it could be unveiled next year.
The project is codenamed Infinite and will be jointly developed by Samsung, Google and Qualcomm. It will leverage Samsung Display's OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) technology, commonly known as Micro OLED. Unlike Apple, which had to pay Sony a small fortune, Samsung can use camera sensors from Samsung LSI. Although it could use a modified version of an Exynos chip, Samsung's AR/VR headset will likely stick with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 SoC.
Samsung plans to unveil Project Infinite (complete with Galaxy branding) in Q2 2024 via a Galaxy Unpacked event, meaning it will probably debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. However, the initial production run will be limited, with Samsung planning to manufacture just 30,000 units, which sounds right for a first-generation product.
