Rumor | IP filings suggest a new Samsung Galaxy XR device is on the way
Two filings made by Samsung to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) suggest that the tech company is working on a new XR gadget. According to LetsGoDigital, Samsung Electronics has filed two trademark applications under the names 'Galaxy VR' and 'Galaxy 360'. The latest filing was made on March 30th 2022, with similar applications made in Austria in September 2018.
In a recent interview with The Investor at Mobile World Congress (MWC), Han Jong-Hee, CEO of Samsung Electronics, suggested that the company will announce a new XR device shortly. However, no further details are known about the gadget at this stage, so it remains to be seen whether this is a VR headset, AR glasses, or something else entirely.
This would be the first VR gadget that Samsung has launched since it released the Gear VR headset in 2015. The device was initially designed to work with the company's flagship smartphones, such as the Galaxy S10; however, Gear VR is no longer supported on phones running Android 12.
Based on the names on the filings, it is likely that any new XR device would be part of the Galaxy ecosystem, focusing on connectivity between multiple Samsung devices. Han further hinted at this by saying that Samsung's "competitive edge" was its multi-device approach and that the company was focused on "the connectivity between devices instead of individual products."
