Meta Quest 2 Pro: Next-generation Oculus VR headset rumoured to feature numerous improvements as release window leaks
Facebook may have brought the Oculus brand under Meta, but the company is yet to release a Meta-branded VR product. According to the renowned Ming-Chi Kuo, that will change this year, but not until the summer at the earliest. Reportedly, Meta is considering a 2H 2022 release; he has not been any more specific than that at this stage.
Kuo adds that the next Oculus VR headset will arrive as the Quest 2 Pro, not the Quest 3. While the name suggests that the Quest 2 Pro would not be a true next-generation device, Kuo believes that it will contain several features that the existing Quest 2 lacks.
Specifically, Kuo believes that the Quest 2 Pro will adopt mini-LED displays, which should deliver improved brightness compared to the Quest 2. Additionally, each display is expected to measure 2.48-inches across with a 2,160 x 2,160 resolution per eye.
Moreover, Kuo believes that the Quest 2 Pro will switch to 2P Pancake lenses, eschewing the 1P Fresnel lenses from the Quest 2. Separately, Kuo asserts that the Quest 2 Pro will be able to recognise facial expressions, unlike the existing Quest 2.
While Kuo has provided several details about the Quest 2 Pro, he has not revealed anything about prices. Potentially, the Quest 2 Pro could be the name of the Oculus VR headset that leaked in November 2021. As we discussed at the time, various leaked promotional videos suggested that Meta had adopted a new design and revised controllers.
