A new patent suggests that Google is working on smart home device controls via AR glasses. This wearable will likely be a successor to the Google Glass, which stopped selling earlier this year. The US Patent Application Publication details an AR gadget with an image sensor, allowing it to recognize objects and generate a three-dimensional map of the space using six degree of freedom (6D0F) positioning.
This visual data allows you to interact with smart devices in your room using hand-tracking to pick up gestures. Drawings provide a range of examples, such as controlling a Nest speaker, with options to Play Music or Search. You could also use the wearable to open an app on a smart TV or adjust the settings on your Nest Thermostat. Further applications could involve switching lights on or off and interacting with displays like the Nest Hub Max.
The original Google Glass headset was launched to the public in 2014, with the second generation Enterprise Edition 2 discontinued in March and support ending in September. This is one of several patents filed by Google surrounding AR glasses, suggesting it plans to release a third device in the future. It remains to be seen when the Google Glass could return and whether it will have this smart home control feature.
