Rumor | The Xiaomi 12 series will include a variant with an under-display camera
The Xiaomi 12 series has been slated to launch with specs to challenge the OEM's current top-end non-foldable smartphone the Mix 4 in many ways. On the other hand, the older phone was also thought to have been spared in the sense that it would still be the only one with the OEM's "camera under-panel" (CUP) technology on the newer models' launch. Now, according to a new leak, this may not be the case.
The blog Xiaomiui has published images allegedly showing a new Xiaomi CUP phone, occasionally next to a Mix 4 unit flanked by the Mi 10 and Mi 11. They both patently have no visible selfie camera, although the "new" device has screen contents that may be associated with MIUI 13.
These images also throw the code-names odin and thor, thought to correspond to the Mix 4 and the 12-series' most premium (or Ultra Enhanced) variant respectively, around in their descriptions.
Xiaomiui surmises that one of these 'CUP phones' may indeed be the latter, through exhaustive comparisons of the Mix 4's display with that of the rumored new panel type developed for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered phones.
They are said to involve more uniform corners and a slightly more rounded appearance compared to the 2021 super-flagship. On the other hand, the leak also patently involves the outdated "Mi 12" naming confirmation, whereas it has clearly been phased out in favor of a simple numerical scheme going forward.
