It’s possible Xiaomi has already raked in the equivalent of around US$300 million with the Mi Mix 4, which was only officially released on August 10. The pricing strategy for the latest entrant to the Mi Mix line is incredibly aggressive, no doubt encouraging Xiaomi’s fans to reserve the Mi Mix 4 in their hundreds of thousands. With the base 8 GB + 128 GB configuration Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 costing 4,999 yuan (US$771) and offering an under-display camera, 108 MP main sensor, 120 W wired charging, SD 888+ processor, and so much more, it’s easy to see why the phone is seemingly selling by the truckload.
The estimated US$300 million figure comes from a report by MyDrivers that states 350,000 Mi Mix 4 reservations had already been made across the JD.com and TMall retail platforms. The average price over the four configurations is 5,599 yuan (US$864), which when multiplied by 350,000 is just short of two billion yuan: 1,959,650,000 yuan or around US$302.4 million. Of course, it’s likely there will be more pre-orders made for the cheaper Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 models but in turn there are also likely to be many more reservations that have been made via other platforms.
It’s an incredible sales feat, which seems to have already massively outweighed the 500 million yuan investment required just for the Mi Mix 4’s camera under panel (CUP) technology research. Xiaomi’s product page for the Mi Mix 4 has been updated with the information that all four variants are already temporarily out of stock before the official sales date of August 16. Interestingly, Xiaomi executive Pan Jiutang has commented that the pricing for the Mi Mix 4 is “crazy”, and it appears smartphone shoppers in China have been taking advantage of that craziness.
