A new leak implies that the fastest fingers will secure Valve’s VR headset first. A revised datamined email suggests no lottery-based reservation system for Steam Frame pre-orders. As a result, scalpers could top the queue and deny the wearable to anxious gamers.

Rumors point to a Steam Frame release date as soon as the week of September 14th. It’s widely expected that Valve will use a reservation system, as with the Steam Machine and Controller. New evidence hints buyers could claim the VR headset on a first-come, first-served basis. If the company opts against a lottery, it may allow scalpers to prevail.

On September 11th, insider Brad Lynch discovered more backend tweaks on the marketplace. Now deleted because of follower infighting, the wording of a datamined email has changed. When Steam Frame pre-orders open, customers will likely enter a queue or waiting list and receive a message. However, there is confusion about what would happen next.

The initial version of the email explained that the reservation system randomizes entries. Instead of a set time ahead of the release date where the fastest to click are successful, gamers are selected randomly over a longer period. Valve introduced this process with the Steam Machine following a controversial Steam Controller launch.

Bots assemble?

The updated message Lynch shared omits any mention of a lottery. The company would still take reservations, but buyers higher up on the queue or waiting list have an advantage. In a repeat of the controller debacle, that could let scalpers monopolize stock and resell the scarce hardware for profit.

Shipping records suggest that after the February 2026 delay, the manufacturer stockpiled units. Even so, those measures didn’t prevent shortages of the other gear. No matter how Valve handles Steam Frame pre-orders, limited supply will frustrate. Still, most followers preferred the less stressful sequence experienced with the mini PC.

VR headset enthusiasts continue to wait for clarity on the Steam Frame release date and its price. Lynch earlier leaked that reviews for the head-mounted display were in progress and that a mid-September launch was likely. The latest reason for hope came in the form of a SteamVR 2.17 update, which may be preparation for its debut.
