After FCC approval, Valve could launch its latest VR solution at any time. Even so, the Steam Machine and Steam Controller certifications happened many months before they shipped. There are also new doubts about the Steam Frame price, with Qualcomm hiking processor costs.

Buyers awaiting Valve’s new VR headset have seen several encouraging signs. Now, the hardware is FCC certified, a critical step before orders can begin. However, the Steam Frame release date may not come quite as early as some fans had hoped.

Insider Brad Lynch shared that approval became final on July 29th, after the manufacturer submitted an application on May 13th. Steam Frame specs include wireless technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. As a result, it was subject to inspection by the U.S. government agency. Sadly, documents such as user manuals and photos remain confidential until November 10th.

FCC approval timing

FCC certification was an anxiously awaited development. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that the Steam Machine received approval on December 31st, 2025, and didn’t ship until June 29th. Meanwhile, the Steam Controller saw the green light on November 24th, 2025, before shipping on May 4th.

The later FCC approval doesn’t necessarily crush hopes for an imminent Steam Frame release date. Still, another development with component costs has also raised some doubts. In the case of Valve’s mini PC, the memory shortage already delayed its arrival. That was also a factor with the VR headset, which uses LPDDR5X RAM and internal storage.

Frame price hike?

More recently, Bloomberg learned that Qualcomm was raising the price of its chips by a double-digit percentage. The news threatens to inflate the Steam Frame price, since it relies on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It’s possible Valve is rethinking launch plans if it hasn’t secured a large enough supply.

Despite some concerns, the company’s last update on the Index successor stated it would ship in summer 2026. That leaves August and part of September as potential start times for orders, pre-orders, or reservations.

Other reasons for optimism include a series of Valve imports that likely contain the VR headset. A welcome tour was also added to the marketplace’s backend. Finally, VR games continue to receive verified labels, indicating they are optimized for the experience. If history of the Steam Machine and Steam Controller repeat, the Frame should emerge soon.
