Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7: Slimmer also means more compromises

Samsung has impressively demonstrated that it can also build thin foldables. However, this requires a few compromises. Google is taking a completely different approach with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which is even thicker. We venture a comparison.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has been unveiled (we report) and is expected to be available from October. Time to compare the two competitors:

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 (buy here on Amazon) and the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold represent very different philosophies in the foldable market. Samsung focuses on uncompromising portability: ultra-thin, lightweight and with a large cover display that can be used almost like a normal smartphone. Add to that the extremely high-resolution 200-MPix camera and the fast Snapdragon chip, which make the Fold 7 particularly interesting for power users and photography fans.

Google is taking a different approach, emphasising robustness and everyday usability, and is even thicker than its predecessor: with IP68 protection, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first fully dust- and waterproof foldable, offering a larger battery with potentially longer runtime and a bright, durable display. The camera resolution is lower, but the combination of telephoto zoom and AI-assisted image processing is impressive.

Both devices promise seven years of updates, but differ in their software focus: Galaxy AI delivers practical multitasking features, while Gemini AI in the Pixel is more focused on voice and assistance functions. The Pixel is slightly cheaper, making it an attractive choice for users who value durability and AI, while the Fold 7 appeals primarily to tech enthusiasts who prefer maximum performance and premium design.

Which choice is the right one depends largely on your personal preferences. In our test of the Galaxy Z Fold7, the speakers were not as powerful as in the predecessor model, but at least the battery has not become smaller and the S Pen layer has been sacrificed for the sake of the height. Our upcoming review will reveal what surprises the Pixel 10 Pro Fold has in store despite its size.
