The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is significantly thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold6, but is said to be significantly more robust. According to Samsung Display, the smartphone can withstand 500,000 folds instead of "only" 200,000 like the Galaxy Z Fold6. Samsung has adapted the display structure and reinforced the panel with a thin titanium plate to increase its durability, while the IP48 certification guarantees that the device is waterproof.
YouTube channel Gupta Information Systems has now tested just how robust the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 really is. For this purpose, the smartphone was first frozen in a block of ice and thawed after twelve hours without any damage. It was then submerged in a river for 30 minutes to test waterproofness. It turns out that water is not a problem per se, but rather the sand in the river that finds its way into the hinge. Nevertheless, the YouTuber manages to rinse the sand out of the hinge with running water.
Galaxy Z Fold7 excels in drop test, but not in scratch test
The Galaxy Z Fold7 is then submerged in a variety of different liquids, including cola, coffee, dish soap and milk, all of which the smartphone survives without a hitch. The scratch test shows that the secondary display, made of Gorilla Glass Victus 2, only scratches when it comes into contact with an object that has a hardness of at least 6 on the Mohs scale. The "Ultra Thin Glass" of the foldable display, however, cannot withstand scratches from objects that are 3 or greater.
Despite its thin casing, the Galaxy Z Fold7 cannot be bent, even with great force. The Galaxy Z Fold7 even survives multiple drops from head height without any visible damage to the display or back, although the angle at which a smartphone hits the ground is always crucial.
