While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, according to Samsung, can "only" withstand 200,000 folds, the Galaxy Z Fold7 has a lifespan of 500,000 folds, according to Samsung Display.
To determine this value, independent certification company Bureau Veritas opened and closed the flagship foldable 500,000 times at a room temperature of 25°C over a period of 13 days. No damage was incurred. This corresponds to a lifespan of ten years, assuming users open and close their smartphones an average of 100 times per day. To enable this longer lifespan, Samsung has fundamentally redesigned the display structure.
This starts with the top layer, which is made of "Ultra Thin Glass" that is 50% thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold6. The various layers of the OLED panel are combined with a more elastic adhesive, which is supposed to make the display four times more impact-resistant. Additionally, the screen is reinforced by a thin titanium plate on the back, and the redesigned hinge also purportedly contributes to a longer lifespan.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is IP48 certified and so completely waterproof, but only protected against larger dust particles and grains of sand. The frame is made of the more robust Advanced Armor Aluminum, while both the back and the secondary display are protected from scratches by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Lastly, the display glass is reinforced with ceramic to better withstand drops.
