Official dimensions prove incorrect: Galaxy Z Fold7 and Oppo Find N5 thicker than specified

For the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7 in July, Samsung is advertising the smartphone as the thinnest foldable in the world, just like Oppo did a few weeks ago, but the official figures do not exactly stand up to close scrutiny. This also explains the varying specifications in thickness for the Galaxy Z Fold6 successor.

If you're looking for the official dimensions of a smartphone, the details can usually be found in the corresponding data sheet because that's where you'll find the measurements down to the millimeter, right? Wrong. Manufacturers seem to have established idiosyncratic measurement methodologies, at least for foldables, which, while logically justifiable, seem quite arbitrary.

Well-known French leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer aka @OnLeaks, who recently asked the X community for the exact dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (available here at Amazon), got the ball rolling. He didn't want to know what the data sheet says, but rather how thick the Samsung foldable actually is in practice. Based on a CAD module, he measured the soon-to-be-launched successor Galaxy Z Fold7 as 4.5-mm thick back in February, which was undercut by equally reliable leaker Ice Universe's measurement of 3.9 mm.

Samsung does not include protruding bezel in its measurements

It quickly became apparent with the help of YouTuber Shane Craig (see video below) that Samsung is cheating somewhat in its measurements. Both leakers are correct in their statements. Samsung measures the height of the unfolded case to the edge of the flexible display at 3.9 mm. However, there is an approximately 0.5 mm bezel above this, which protects the two display halves from direct contact when the smartphone is folded. This gap also explains why the Galaxy Z Fold7 doesn't measure exactly twice the 3.9 mm when folded, but rather 8.9 mm, according to the leak.

Oppo also measures "incorrectly"

However, Samsung is not alone with its peculiar measurement methodology. As Shane Craig has discovered, Oppo's data is also incorrect. And there is also a contradiction between the data sheet and the measurement results for the Galaxy Z Fold6. According to his measurements:

  • The Galaxy Z Fold6 is exactly 6.2 mm thick instead of the 5.6 mm given on the data sheet.
  • The Oppo Find N5 measures 4.56 mm when unfolded instead of the official 4.2 mm.
  • The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 should therefore be 4.45 mm thick and not 3.9 mm.

Whether these differences are relevant for the end user is of course another matter.
