According to the latest rumors, Apple is planning at least two significant camera upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro (Max). The anniversary iPhone in 2027 will also be particularly exciting, as it is expected to be equipped with a camera sensor developed by Apple for the first time, which promises far better image quality thanks to new technology.

Following rumors about the new iPhone designs for the next three years, two leakers are now reporting on new details about the camera upgrades that can be expected in the next two iPhone generations. First and foremost, leaker Digital Chat Station confirms earlier rumors that the successor to the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a main camera with a variable aperture.

This would allow photographers to reduce the aperture of the lens when needed in order to achieve greater depth of field. This can be useful, for example, for capturing sharp images of several people standing behind each other. The iPhone 18 Pro is also expected to feature a periscope telephoto camera with a larger aperture. For comparison, the 48 MP telephoto camera on the iPhone 17 Pro combines a 1/2.55-inch sensor with a 100 mm f/2.8 lens. A faster lens would primarily enable better photos and videos in low light. According to Digital Chat Station, it is possible that these two upgrades will be reserved for the more expensive iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Meanwhile, Korean leaker yeux1122, reports that not only Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo are currently working on cameras with LOFIC sensors, but Apple is also said to be developing its own camera sensor based on this technology, which is expected to make its debut in the anniversary iPhone in 2027. LOFIC is the abbreviation for "Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor". This technology allows overexposed pixels to be read a second time with lower light sensitivity to prevent details from being lost in overexposed areas of a photo. This effectively increases the dynamic range significantly without combining multiple differently exposed photos into an HDR image.
